Hello! I have worked as a high school English teacher for the past two decades, specializing in 10th and 12th grade writing and literature instruction, including honors and AP English. I have extensive experience working one-on-one with students to improve their reading comprehension and writing abilities, including preparation for standardized tests such as the SAT and MCAS. As an instructor of 12th graders, I have had great success guiding students in writing The College Essay -- from appropriate topic choice through outlines, multiple drafts, and the finished final product. My students' success is MY success!
Prior to becoming a high school teacher, I worked reviewing incoming applications in the admissions office at Harvard University School of Design and at Boston University Law School, which gave me the "inside" perspective on what colleges are looking for in terms of quality writing. On a more personal note, I am a mother of three daughters: one in middle school, one a college freshman, and one a former student at UMass.
In the two decades I have worked with teenagers, the rapport I am able to easily establish with my students has always been my primary strength. My training and skills include English literature and poetry (medieval through present-day), writing/composition, research , proofreading and editing. I also teach Public Speaking and speechwriting, should you need help in those areas. Patience and a sense of humor characterize my instructional style.
I am skilled in online learning and can provide both "virtual" tutoring and in-person meetings at your location. While I still teach high school, I am available from mid-afternoon through evenings and some weekends. I look forward to working with you to enhance your academic success and reach your goals! Hello! For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught English for over 22 years. My daily work includes proofreading student writing and recommending editorial changes. In addition, I have worked as a proofreader for a local author.
I have taught public speaking and debate for many years in the areas of speechwriting, understanding one's audience, projection and voice quality, and overcoming nerves. I have made many presentations to adults and fellow educators over the years, and understand what constitutes a compelling presentation. Persuasive speaking using key rhetorical techniques is my specific area of expertise. I am skilled in tutoring even the most fearful student in the art of public speaking.
