My name is Beth, and although I'm not a traditionally trained tutor, I enjoy being with and teaching children so much that I wanted the opportunity to connect with you through this website.
I've had past experiences as an ESL tutor, a VISTA volunteer in an elementary school, a Journalist in the USN/USNR and am currently a Project Coordinator for the Foster Grandparent Program wherein senior volunteers help children with reading in the area public schools. I've also been a Cub Scout Leader and have many family members who are teachers, all of which has made me familiar with current teaching methods and awareness of present day problems. As a possible testament to my abilities, I was constantly reading to my son from the very beginning of his life and at the age of three he was reading on his own.
I believe that I could offer a less formal way of tutoring for those children that might do well with integrated learning, meaning that I would teach the needed specifics in a way that combines their natural curiosity with positive reinforcement and I would love the chance to meet you and your child. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I love to read! My mother was a librarian so I was raised with the expectation that books would be a big part of my life and I've seen the value of this reasoning over and over again. My current job as a coordinator of senior volunteers who help children with reading in area schools has only emphasized the problem of those lacking this skill.
My past experience has included tutoring an adult man using the phonics and comprehension method of the time and I was quite successful in enabling him to finally grasp how to put the sounds together in order for him to feel comfortable reading beyond childhood level and I also worked as a VISTA volunteer in a third grade classroom for almost a year helping the children with reading, writing, comprehension and basic computer.
I partnered with my only son through all his school years, sometimes as a home room mother but also as a Cub Scout leader who organized weekly meetings, award ceremonies and outings and wrote articles on these various events for the local newspaper.
I've been a Journalist in the Navy taking photographs, composing advertisements and news articles and also worked in the advertising department of the Portsmouth Herald, Portsmouth, NH, assisting with classifieds and making up local ads.
I have many interests including photography, landscaping, animals, gardening and camping and would like to incorporate these and any interests of the child in his or her quest for increased reading skills and comprehension.
