I am currently an ESOL tutor employed by the SAU9 School District (Conway, North Conway). I travel from school to school working with ESOL students Grades Kindergarten through High School during the school day. My professional teaching background spans 13 years devoted to nurturing growth in public school students, mostly teaching grades 3-6. Though in 2011-12 a fun challenge was teaching Gifted and Talented Math to 50 students in Grades 6-8 and leading them in statewide math team competitions. I taught them Algebra I and II and Geometry. Prior to earning my Maine K-8 teaching certification and 36 M. Ed. credits from the University of Southern Maine, I was a Literacy Ed. Tech Specialist. I attended special workshops in Literacy, such as Guided Reading and Junior Great Books Leadership, and took college credit courses with a Literacy focus, such as teaching Writing and an Acting course. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from USM's Extended Teaching Education Program in 2006 and was awarded a Certificate of Excellence by Praxis for scoring within the top 15% nationally on my teaching exam.
I have enjoyed being a private tutor to 17 students, to date, after school and in the summers. At one time I also volunteered with Catholic Charities of Maine to tutor a Bosnian immigrant family and help the daughters prepare for their nursing and med school exams. In my 2nd photo here on WyzAnt, I'm with some Thai students - that was an amazing time for me in 2010-2011 volunteer teaching English in Cambodia and Thailand and living with the families. Wherever I am, whoever I teach, I am honored to be a part of that student's learning process and hope to become a valued member of your or your student's educational experience.
Experience has taught me that It is important to be aware of energy and concentration levels so as to make sure the tutoring session is productive. Incorporating a sense of humor and moments of learning play keeps the lesson upbeat, especially for younger students. My biggest reward in tutoring is watching a student's self-confidence grow. I've seen readers who didn't know they were readers find their voice and joy in books and really take off. Being able to discuss what one is reading and trying a variety of genres is an important step to the enjoyment of literature. In writing, I encourage a student to tap into their creativity while giving them the specific tips and tools to focus and develop their thoughts. When it comes to math, it's all about practice, so again, the one-on-one time allows the student to sit with me and see correct easy methods modeled so that he/she overcomes that stigmatized fear of math and realizes that it is all like a puzzle that is very solvable. I fit a lot of content and encouragement into each personalized lesson. I also document everything carefully to track the student's process and provide a record of accomplishments. One-on-one teaching provides an amazing opportunity to really listen to students and fully adapt instruction to an individual's needs. Goals are set and achieved together - student/parent (if appropriate)/teacher - as a team. I have experience tutoring in a wide variety of subjects and all ages, so please feel free to give me a shout if you're wondering if I might be the best fit to be a part of your or your student's learning journey.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
