Drawing,

Drawing

Drawing is possible and delightful for everyone! For the past few years I have been teaching drawing and watercolor to grades 2-9. I have found that all students can learn some basic principles of drawing which will help them to take joy and satisfaction in their art. Creativity is only part of it. Having an understanding of basic shapes, ways of seeing what's really there, perspective, shading, rendering three-dimensional objects on two-dimensional paper, and many other aspects of drawing will help every student to draw beautifully and to see scenes in a new way. In my drawing classes I introduce shapes and enjoyable pictures which are easy for students to learn and which painlessly teach specific concepts. For instance, we begin by drawing steps, cubes, cylinders, cones, and flag shapes and then progress on to shading, perspective, and more complex skills. We experiment with seeing differently through "negative space" drawings, "gesture" drawings, and different media such as chalk, pastel, and charcoal. The kids are always delighted to show their friends and families the drawings they have learned, often far more advanced than they thought they could do at first. I have taught watercolor classes at Michael's craft store in Dallas, and have taught drawing and watercolor at the Sherman Enrichment Classes and other homeschool coops for several years. I am primarily self taught, through the careful study of fine artists' books, but have taken courses at Duke University and at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. My watercolors and prints are sold in gift shops in Dallas and Boston and can be seen on request or on the web.

ACT English

Proficiency in English comes from immersion in language - excellent language. The more well-written and articulate words you read, the more your English will improve. This process can be accelerated, though, by learning Latin/Greek roots and extra vocabulary, by strengthening grammar skills, and by reading, thinking about, and writing about literature. Through a combined program of reading, writing practice, grammar, and vocabulary, I help my students beef up their English skills quickly and thoroughly.
English,

English

In teaching English, I use a combined program tailored to each student's needs. The most important thing a students can do to increase their skill in English is to read well-written and articulate books - books which are slightly above their present level and which introduce them to interesting sentence structure and rich vocabulary. Along with assigned reading I give vocabulary, grammar, and writing practice. This can be specific if the student is preparing for a standardized test like the ACT or SAT.

Katherine was wonderful!

I had never worked with a tutor before working with Katherine and she exceeded all expectations. She was very warm and instantly made me feel comfortable. Extremely knowledgeable with excellent methods! She adapted to my pace and needs immediately, and was quick to respond to and follow-up with me. I believe she mostly works with students younger than me, but as a college student, I definitely recommend Katherine for any age group!
