About Don

I began tutoring English students as an undergraduate and continued to do so through graduate school. During my subsequent career in the financial sector, this experience proved valuable in training new employees in the intricacies of business. I specialize in helping students with expository writing, grammar, SAT Reading and Writing and ACT English.

Everybody has a different approach to learning, and one-on-one tutoring is the best method for finding the best way for each individual. I discovered early on that the key to successful tutoring is an ability to assess the student's unique strengths and weaknesses and adjust the material and presentation accordingly.

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in English and years of experience tutoring students in grammar, composition and literature. I concentrate on explaining difficult grammatical concepts without getting bogged down in technical jargon.

I am usually available for appointments from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m, both in person and online. I generally meet with students at the most convenient public library, but I will consider other locations if the student prefers. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT English test is a high pressure exercise (75 questions in 45 minutes) in reading comprehension and analysis. My approach emphasizes close examination of sample tests to determine and address the student's strengths and weaknesses. We then work to increase understanding and to develop effective test-taking strategies.

ACT Reading

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in English and extensive experience in tutoring high school and college students in reading comprehension and writing. I am familiar with the format of the ACT tests, and my tutoring concentrates on working through sample questions with the student. My goal is to improve his/her understanding of English and to teach practical test-taking strategies.

English

I have degrees in English composition and literature and have been tutoring students of both since my undergraduate days. In discussing literature, I try to show how the best writers achieve interest and clarity--hopefully deriving understanding that students can put to use in their own writing. My aim is always to understand what the students are trying to express and to guide them toward that goal.

Grammar

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in English and have been tutoring students since my undergraduate days. I have also worked as a textbook editor. My primary goal in teaching grammar is to convey basic, practical principles without getting bogged down in confusing jargon. I put a lot of emphasis on careful analysis and discussion of the student's writing, with the constant aim of achieving understanding that can be applied in future work.

IELTS

My English education included a substantial block of ESL training, and, starting as an undergraduate, I have tutored students from a number of linguistic backgrounds: West African, Asian, South American and Eastern European. My career in financial services entailed working with many Asian clients, assisting them in negotiating the minefield of Anglo-American legalese, where the placement of a comma can make the difference between triumph and tragedy.

Since my background includes both academic and business/professional experience, I am able to prepare students for either the General Training or Academic IELTS exams. I have students write as many practice essays (or letters) as time permits, and I review these closely with them to identify and address major and/or recurring problems. The exams impose strict time constraints, so I emphasize techniques for working under pressure.

Literature

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in English literature. I began tutoring as an undergraduate, and have continued to study and tutor ever since. In discussing literature, I began by working toward an understanding of the basic, literal level of the work and, once that has been achieved, moving on to an exploration of ideas and themes. I attempt to convey my enthusiasm for literature to my students in the hope of sparking a continuing interest on their part.

Proofreading

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in English. In addition to proofreading my own work and that of students, I have worked as a professional proofreader/copy editor for a textbook publisher.

SAT Reading

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in English and have tutored reading and writing students since my undergraduate days. My particular qualifications for SAT Reading include a familiarity with the style and approach of the SAT and an ability to assess each student's strengths and weaknesses. Successful tutoring results from an effort to help the student recognize his/her individual learning style and develop study methods for that style. And practical test-taking advice (such as time management) never hurts.

SAT Writing

I have tutored students at both the high school and college levels in reading and writing (academic and professional) since my undergraduate days. I have both a B.A. and an M.A. in English. SAT preparation involves a great deal of practice writing, followed by careful examination and discussion the student's work. I emphasize fundamentals of grammar and organization, as well as the clarity of thought and expression so important to SAT success.

Writing

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in English, and I have tutored composition students (both high school and college) since my undergraduate days. I work to adjust my methods to suit the needs and capabilities of the individual student and try to explain the complexities of grammar without getting bogged down in confusing jargon.

What I was looking for.

Don helped me on my two college essays. We went into detail about how I can give them more flow and make them more precise for answering the prompts. This is exactly what I was looking for.
