About Jaclyn

I am fascinated by languages: how a verb is constructed, how a noun can explain a culture, and how a sentence that follows a simple pattern can form complex ideas. When I first started my Spanish education, I can remember feeling invincible standing in a line at the grocery store and understanding what a Hispanic family was saying about their future dinner. I've always wanted to give that feeling to others. A language holds so much power.

The first time I lived abroad I was sixteen and convinced before arriving in Sevilla, Spain, that I knew Spanish. However, I couldn't have been more wrong. For the two and a half months I was there, it was not until my ride back to the airport with a taxi driver that I actually knew what was going on. I realized in that moment that to fully understand a different language and culture one would have to be fully immersed and relinquish self doubt. During my second immersion experience in Granada, Spain I did not allow myself to doubt the Spanish that I knew, and I dove right in. For weeks, my sentences were full of grammatical errors that my education would have frowned upon. But because I used the language in a way that was authentic to me, my fluency and confidence in Spanish grew exponentially.

When I began my career as a Spanish teacher, I knew that I needed to be an educator who would engage their students in a real world use of the language. In order to achieve authentic assessment and student engagement, I incorporated Project Based Learning into my classroom at Three Rivers School. Through Project Based Learning (PBL) I am able to give a diverse group of learners the same assessment to demonstrate their competency of a certain set of vocabulary and/or grammar, but allow each student to proceed through the assignment with their own personal experiences and use of the topic at hand. My PBL classroom allows for the student to face their own set of missteps and achievements with the curriculum, as they are required to reflect on their knowledge and ability with each summative assessment. Their reflections lead to open, competency based conversation between myself and the student.

I relocated to Southern New Hampshire and began a teaching position at Hudson Memorial School and was faced with the challenge of very few resources and low student enrollment. To broaden interest and streamline a vertical acceleration program with the district's high school, I began to integrate 21st century skills into my PBL classroom. Using Google sites, students create a digital portfolio which showcases all of their work. For example, students develop speaking samples using Google Voice, create cooking shows using YouTube, explain their family using Photostory, and collaboratively write essays using Google Drive. As the students complete and post each task, they are able to have a physical reminder of their abilities in Spanish and feel the pride of their accomplishments.

I am excited to continue to grow as a teacher by working one on one with students who need help in Spanish. I am creative, experienced, and passionate for the language. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, and I will reschedule within that time frame.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Spanish

I am a public school Spanish teacher with 7 years of experience. I enjoy looking at Spanish from all angles, and giving students a level of empowerment by learning another language. I have a B.A. from the University of New Hampshire in Spanish Language and English Literature, as well as a Master's in Education from Keene State College.
