About Jacob

I provide professional, individualized, and student-paced instruction that is time efficient and yields results, guaranteed. If your student does not improve their SAT score by 200-400 points, I will provide instruction free of charge until the results are realized--nobody else in the industry gets higher score improvements than I do. I'm also an expert in AP test strategy in Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Science. Don't waste time and money on low quality instruction. One on one tutoring is by far the most effective form of instruction, and my expertise will open doors for your student: according to Stanford University, a teacher in the 90th percentile can create an additional 1 million dollars in lifetime earnings for their students!

My career in education began in high school: as a member of the National Honors Society, I would volunteer my tutoring services to my peers and I received an award for my volunteer tutoring at Greenmont Avenue Elementary School in Dracut. In college, I began private tutoring for tuition money. When I graduated Suma Cum Laude from the University of Massachusetts as a Bachelor of Science in Biology, I used my expertise in education first at Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia and later on a Enterprise Academy in Newport News, Virginia. My 2 years of experience in inner-city public schools solidified my preconception that large class sizes waste time and money. Fed up with the ineffectiveness and bureaucracy of the public school system, I pursued my masters of science at Virginia Tech and again graduated with distinction. When I moved to California, I was determined to craft my own educational program for one on one tutoring that would be high yield and time efficient. I worked for one of the largest private tutoring companies in the bay area for the last 5 years, helping thousands of students navigate the standardized testing gauntlet.

"Late Every Time"

- Christine, Dunstable, MA on 12/9/14
Jacob replied on 8/21/2015

I really enjoyed working with Christine's middle school students, but we differed greatly on how we thought very young students should be introduced to standardized testing. Anxiety about the testing conditions and timing pressure was playing a major role in the performance of both her students. Christine seemed to be piling on the pressure and stress at every turn for these students. I tried to explain to her that in order to succeed on the exam, students need to have a relaxed state of mind: multiple studies show that stress actually inhibits reasoning and memory, not to mention how it negatively effects the development of young students. In the end, I stopped working with Christine because of these fundamental differences in our approach to success on the standardized exams. It's important that Parents understand that as much as you are picking me as your tutor, I am picking you as my client, and our arrangement can be terminated by either party at any time--there are not contracts involved. When I coach students, I do it in a time efficient manner and I work hard to help them balance their commitments to school, sports, and family. It's important to me that, especially where very young students are concerned, the conditions in which they are introduced to standardized testing are balanced, relaxed and supportive. Since I work in the student's home, I spend a lot of time commuting from one area to another. It's important that student's keep a 15-20 minute window of time open for my arrival before the session due to traffic, especially if it's my first time to your home. Much of my work is done after school, so it's dark and easy to get lost. A 15-20 minute window for arrival is my policy, as I work all over the state of New Hampshire and Massachusetts and it can be very difficult to judge traffic conditions between sessions and my schedule is set prior to the development of accidents, etc that might cause delays in my commute time between sessions. Thanks for understanding. If you have any questions about my policies, please feel free to message me. Cheers, Jake

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have worked with thousands of students to help them identify the most most common errors on the exam. My scores are perfect every time and your student's can be too. I'm a credentialed teacher with 10 years of experience. I have a Master's degree in Life Sciences and I have studied the exam rigorously over the years to become an expert in the field. My average score improvement is 4 points on the ACT--some students score as much as 8 to 10 points higher!

ACT Math

I've studies all the exams released by the SAT to find out exactly how they cause your student to make mistakes. Thousands of students have worked with me and I've studied their mistakes and why they make the errors they do. I put those two components together to help your student quickly identify his or her most common errors and NEVER make them again.

ACT Reading

The reading test is a very personal test. You're student's reading speed really dictates which strategy will produce the best possible score. I assess your student's strengths and weaknesses and help them develop a strategy that produces the highest accuracy. This is not a one size fits all approach. I've developed over a dozen personalized strategies to maximizing scores in the reading portion of the test and I'll help your students improve quickly and gain confidence.

ACT Science

I have a bachelor's degree in Biology and a Master's degree in Agriculture. Over the years, I've taught Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, Oceanography, and Marine Biology to high school students in both public and private schools. I'm an expert at interpreting graphs and charts and I can help your student to hone their skills on the ACT science section. I guarantee an improvement of 3-5 points!

Biology

I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Massachusetts with a Bachelors in Biology and I graduated again with distinction from Virginia Tech with a Master's in Agriculture and Life Sciences. I taught high school science in the public schools for years and was a lead teacher. I've studied the AP exams rigorously over the years to become a test expert.

PSAT

The PSAT is exactly half the full SAT without the essay. It takes students 1.5 hours to complete the 2 critical reading sections, 2 math sections and one grammar section. I've developed a way to help sophomore and juniors finish each section on time, with less test fatigue. With my help, your student could score over 2150, allowing them to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. I've had 4 students go on to win this prestigious award.

SAT Math

I have worked with thousands of students to help them identify the most most common errors on the exam. My scores are perfect every time and your student's can be too. I'm a credentialed teacher with 10 years of experience. I have a Master's degree in Life Sciences and I have studied the exam rigorously over the years to become an expert in the field. My average score improvement is 256 points on the SAT--some students score as much as 400 points higher!

SAT Reading

Over the past 10 years, I have read every essay that the SAT has released. I have identified 3 critical tricks that are used in the answer choices to confuse students. In addition, I've developed a way to help every student finish the test on time, every time. The critical reading timing is essential and that is where most students suffer the most damage to their score.

SAT Writing

I have studied the SAT intensely over the last 10 years, developing a program to help students overcome the difficulties of the SAT writing test. There are just 5 major errors that I have identified. I'll help your student to become systematic about identifying these errors so they never miss!

SSAT

The SSAT test designers modeled the exam after the SAT, but with a level of difficulty aimed at 8-11th graders. I've taken all of the SAT and SSAT exams released to the public and identified the most common errors and the most commonly misunderstood content. Therefore, I can help you student identify quickly exactly what errors their making and lay out the content efficiently so they never make those mistakes again.

Vocabulary

I have identified the 500 essential vocabulary terms that will help your student to master the SAT. What's more, I've created an easy way for your student to add vocabulary quickly, and I help them to identify the correct strategy to use. The guessing strategy and timing strategy that is appropriate for your student on the vocabulary can change dramatically based on their reading speed on the passages. I help students identify which strategy is right for them and how to get their highest possible score.

Very efficient and thorough! — Jacob was instrumental in guiding my junior through SAT and ACT prep. If one method did not work, he suggested another. He was able to use the time very well, cheer lead if necessary, and congratulate on a job well done. My son wanted to send him a note the day he took the SAT test to say thank you for helping me. ...
