Lee is excellent at working with my daughter who partly has a Non-verbal Learning Disorder. Currently, Lee is helping her with the writing process and reading comprehension, and has really made a noticeable improvement to my daughter's confidence in these areas. Lee uses a blend of teaching techniques that are both classic and creative that my daughter can respond to. She is also a pleasure to work with.
Lee has been wonderful! She is a creative teacher who helps draw the best out of our ADD 5th grader. She is teaching him strategies for writing that are helping him become much more comfortable with the process. Her patience and desire to find the best way to work with our son have been a godsend. And she was even willing to help when he was having a meltdown about needing a tutor. She stepped right in to help him understand that there's no shame associated with getting help. He went from hysterical to happy and engaged in about 15 minutes with Lee's help. He looks forward to the days she comes and I love that I hear the two of them chatting and laughing, all while he is learning!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
When the mind is unfocused, it impossible to learn. The first step is to STOP and choose to pay attention deliberately. I have 30 years of "mindfulness' practice that I will teach your child to use. I also have worked with ADD children and adults as part of 25 years teaching public school. The Special Education certificate I have is valid in Mass and NH. I can help.
Aspergers students often suffer from poor social skills, weak organization and motivation. They often read well but struggle when empathy is required to understand the characters. If motivation, emotions and social cues are spelled out... they can cope. This is a non - verbal learning disability which means body language, tone of voice, sarcasm and anything that requires an interpretation of emotions is often challenging.
Remediation for this learning disability requires explicit teaching of appropriate social responses such as: "What three things should you not say in a restaurant?"
"How do you politely refuse an invitation to a party?".
I have certification in Moderate special needs in both Mass and NH. I also have an MA as a Reading Specialist.
I am certified as a Reading Specialist with a Master's in Reading and Language from Boston University. I also took a practicum from the University of Vermont - in the Orton Gillingham method. The brightest of my students that summer jumped 6 grade levels in 6 weeks. More recently, I used the Wilson method with two students from the FW Parker Charter school. I am dyslexic myself and understand what great determination it takes to master the mechanics of spelling and grammar.
I am a reading specialist at all levels plus a certified learning specialist in both Mass and NH. I hold certification in two states.

As a certified reading specialist, I know many methods to teach phonics. My practicum was at the University of Vermont at the Pine Ridge School using the Orton Gillingham method. Recently I used the Wilson method. There is also ... hooked on phonics, word families and the Stevenson method which is primarily Visual. The correct format to teach phonics, sight reading or whole language is usually determined by how the child learns best.
The SAT paragraph are about vocabulary and the nuanced understanding for words in context. At this level passing requires more that just a basic understand of words- student must deal with tone, intensity and the relationship of the word to the style of the paragraph. A good discussion about meaning offers more to student growth than memorizing random words.
I have a master's degree in Reading and Language and certification as a special educator in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I have taken advanced courses in Emotional/Behavior disorders. I have frequently worked with ADD, Non-verbal L.D students, dyslexic students and Aspergers Students. I consider myself an expert a helping student with organizational issues.
When beginning writers write, they often feel that their work ought to come out perfectly. But writing well is a process with many steps: choosing a subject and attitude, creating a structure for the ideas, organizing, word and sentence review, rewriting for clarity and power. I can create enthusiasm for the writing process and will teach step by step methods that help student succeed.
