About Peg

Everyone learns in different ways and I have belief in addition to the subject material, developing learning methods, i.e. how to learn, is extremely important to achieving success.

In high school and college, I was a very good student in most of my subjects, but not all of them. I graduated in the top 10% of my high school class while focusing on math and drafting and received the best bookkeeper award in accounting. My associate’s degree is in Drafting and Design Technology focusing on Engineering and Math skills. As an undergraduate, I focused on Applied Math / Computer Science, which I continue to pursue even after a family and long career in Hardware and Software Engineering, and Software Product Management. Most recently, I was a project manager and business analyst in IT and Internet business and received my Project Management Professional (PMP). Understanding our strengths and weaknesses allow us to adjust our approach to learning. Learning is more than memorizing facts. It is applying that knowledge where we realize we have achieved success.

At this time, I specialize in Geometry, Algebra, HTML, and JavaScript. My goals are to determine the best methods of learning so that the student achieves their goals.

I have spent my life learning and sharing what I learn with others. As examples, over the years, I have taught swimming to 3-5 year olds for 2 years as volunteer parent instructor and cooking, sewing, and knitting, to 2 homeschooled girls, ages 8 and 10. As part of my responsibilities as software engineer, I have taught CAD/CAM (Unigraphics) to over 100 engineers, draftsmen, and machinists. As a consultant, I have taught HTML, JavaScript, Adobe Flash, ActionScript, Web Design and Internet Business to graphic artists and web designers. Most recently, I mentored a Project Management Professional (PMP) Study Group for professional adults preparing for certification.

What I believe the keys to success are include using the right tools, having the right mindset, and using study techniques such as outlining, focusing on key concepts, and working on problems. I also believe that Mind Mapping is crucial to understand, review, and recall material, Project Based Learning which uses real examples and a hands on approach aids in the understanding and retention of new material, and the Pomodoro Method of learning in several shorter bursts is a better way to lay a solid foundation for understanding and applying new concepts.

I pride myself in the work that I do and I will help determine what works for you. I expect that a student is mindful and respectful. We will work together so I will look for feedback from student and parents. I have a 4-hour cancellation policy; however 24-hour notice is better. We will determine the best study space and times to study. I will travel within a radius to another location if that is more convenient. I will never bill for a lesson that a student or parent is not completely satisfied.

I look forward to hearing from you. Let me help you become successful in reaching your study goals.

Joyce, thank you for your kind feedback. I enjoyed our session and it is true that you learn more by examples, but also working with others. Looking forward to the next lesson, too.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have held the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification for more than five years and have practiced in the industry for over 20 years. I have held a position on the PMI New Hampshire Chapter Board of Directors and hold the title of Director of Operations. I have developed and prepared materials to assist others for sitting for their PMP certification, a four-hour exam.

Geometry

My approach is to start with the basics and work with real examples. I also help determine the best methods to learning as each student is different and each has a unique mindset to learning.

HTML

I am a skilled professional Web Designer and JavaScript programmer. In 2000, I received a certificate in Web Design and JavaScript from the PC School in Manchester, NH to extend my other skills in software engineering and project management. The program included 4 weeks of HTML. I have designed, developed and managed a number of websites for small business professionals. Between 2004 and 2008, I taught several HTML 4 and xHTML classes to web developers and graphic artists at the GoodBrain Academy in Manchester, NH and New Horizons in Nashua, NH. I have taken a review course in HTML V5.

HTML is a hypertext markup language and very English-like.
My approach is to start with the basics and develop skills by reviewing and modifying existing examples, learning the components of the language, and writing web pages using a plain text editor.

JavaScript

I have developed a number of Javascript routines that are used on active websites and submitted one to the JavaScript Library. Between 2004 and 2008, I taught several JavaScript classes to web developers and graphic artists at the GoodBrain Academy in Manchester, NH and New Horizons in Nashua, NH.

JavaScript is an interactive “programming language” which extends the capability of a web user, through the use of a browser, to interact with a web page. JavaScript is designed to be more English-like than other programming languages making it a great language for novice web developers to learn.

My approach is to start with the basics and develop skills by reviewing and modifying existing examples, then develop a plan, write and test scripts for a practical application.

Web Design

I am a skilled professional Web Designer and JavaScript programmer. In 2000, I received a certificate in Web Design and JavaScript from the PC School in Manchester, NH to extend my other skills in software engineering and project management. I have developed many websites since then.

Between 2004 and 2008, I taught several Web Design classes to web developers and graphic artists at the GoodBrain Academy in Manchester, NH and New Horizons in Nashua, NH. My approach is to include the entire design process from design concept to “go live” in addition to learning about the structure of a web site, best practices, user interface design, marketing, and promotion.
