About Doreen

Instructional and Assessment Practices

I have had 12 exceptional years of teaching experience as a Kindergarten teacher and active board member at a private school in Merrimack, NH. I also served as director there in past years. I am an experienced and knowledgeable teacher with a Master of education degree.

I have an inquiry-based style of teaching in which children with varied capacities are allowed and encouraged to wonder and investigate. I create an environment in which lessons are experiential and differentiated (i.e., developmentally appropriate). By instructing in this manner, I ensure that all students are able to connect new material to existing schema, to engage in learning and to have their time in the classroom be a meaningful experience apart from chronological age.

Stages of development and styles of learning must be approached diversely. I pride myself on knowing, understanding and respecting the unique qualities and cultural backgrounds of each of my students. By listening thoughtfully and observing carefully, I identify their development, address their personal needs and allow them opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge through multiple modes. By employing a variety of instructional strategies and tailoring lessons to developmental stages, I am able to encourage each student’s growth in critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.

When assessing, my students are allowed multiple options to exhibit a higher order of thinking in which they analyze, think and express. To prove their knowledge and understanding, students in my class demonstrate and implement what they have learned. Open-ended questions and portfolio work are essential to accurate and effective assessment.

To promote an atmosphere of excellence, I utilize sound, research-based and developmentally appropriate classroom practices along with appropriate assessment practices depending on student needs. I encourage students’ individual progress and achievement while providing an enriching and challenging educational experience for each.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
