Welcome to My Profile:
I have been blessed to be an educator for many years, and taught grades 5-8 for more than a decade. My experience covers a fairly broad range of subject areas all of which I enjoy very much. Over the years, I have been mostly recognized as the science and history teacher, but I also have enjoyed teaching English language arts, reading, spelling, social studies, and religion. At the 7th and 8th grade levels, the sciences and history I have taught include physical science, biology, and American history. I am well read and attend regularly to my own on-going education and professional development. My work in curriculum development and assessment keeps me current. It might also interest you to know that I have a growing expertise in the use of iPads and apps to enhance education.
I have also tutored both children and adults in reading. My approach is always to maximize students' strengths and address weaker areas. I prefer that the tutoring experience be as consistent as possible with the academic and behavioral expectations of the classroom. It is my constant hope that the students who come to me for tutoring will be motivated to work hard and to do their best. What you can expect from me is a firm but caring teacher who is a lover of learning herself. You will find in me a creative and experienced educator who possesses a good deal of expertise in a number of areas. You, too, will have an opportunity to explore your own creativity, develop your critical thinking and communication skills, and strengthen needed academic skills. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to help you step out with greater confidence on to the road to success. What a wonderful mission that is!
Your parents/guardians can depend on regular communication and updates. Assessment practices are current and will be properly discussed with you and with them.
My preference is to work with students in a place free of unrelated distraction and at a time of day that might be more conducive to learning. I look forward to supporting you on your journey toward success.
That's a little bit about me. I can hardly wait to get to know you! Welcome to My Profile:
I have been blessed to be an educator for many years, and taught grades 5-8 for more than a decade. My experience covers a fairly broad range of subject areas all of which I enjoy very much. Over the years, I have been mostly recognized as the science and history teacher, but I also have enjoyed teaching English
I have a Master's Degree in American history. I've taught history in Grades 5-8. I have always been and continue to be an avid student of history. I enjoy teaching it and, in general, students enjoy learning it when I am facilitating their learning. I use a variety of approaches to best engage their learning styles.
I am an experienced teacher who taught biology for many years in grade 7 and physical science in grade 8. My classes have always been a mixture of direct instruction and hands-on experiences for the students. I supervised science education for the Diocese of Norwich, CT for 7 years, and under my direction, science education improved to such a degree that our 7th- and 8th-grade students from many of the 21 schools were consistently winning and placing high in the annual Connecticut Science Fair. For that reason, I have often been asked to judge science fairs at that grade level. I have also collaborated in the writing of an outcomes-based science curriculum.
I hold a BA in Elementary Education and History. I have a Masters Degree in American History. I have Certificate of Advanced Educational Specialization in Catholic School Administration, and a Ph.D. in School Administration.
I have taught social studies (including history and geography), science (including biology and physical science in Grades 7 & 8), spelling, reading, ELA, handwriting, religion, in grades 5-8.
I have tutored 5th grade reading and an adult in phonics and reading.
I have also written curriculum and trained teachers.
I am personally strong in elementary math. As physical science teacher for Grade 8 that strength was essential to assist students with the mathematical problems that arise in that field. I taught them problem-solving skills that helped them to see a clear path through problems. I also successfully completed course work for elementary math while I was in college.
I have successfully taught English Language Arts for many years to students of varying abilities in Grades 5-8. I am very proficient in ELA and enjoy teaching students to become proficient as well. I have most often been successful in developing a teaching approach that maximizes the student's learning style. In that way learning is facilitated and the student is more likely to experience success.
Although English is my first language I have been speaking French since Kindergarten. I have frequently attended meetings where the primary language is French and have no need for translation. Added to that I have been a successful educator for my whole professional life.
I am trained in Palmer Method Handwriting and am often praised for my own handwriting. I have taught handwriting from grades 5-8. Using the Palmer Method I have successfully assisted many students to develop their fine motor skills, proper positioning of the writing instrument, and legible handwriting.
I taught public speaking as a part of language arts education for many years. I have also prepared students for public speaking for important occasions including valedictorian addresses at the University level. I, myself, am an experienced and successful public speaker. I've spoken at a number of national conventions and in very man smaller venues that included school administrators, teachers, parents, and/or students. I've also addressed church groups. It is something I very much enjoy.
Throughout my teaching career I have had the opportunity to teach both reading and math. I have taught reading as a stand-alone subject but I have also taught it in the context of other academic areas. I have taught math in the context of science education and have successfully taught students effective methods for problem solving. I was well prepared to teach both these subjects while in college and the positions I have held throughout the years have given me opportunity to work on curriculum and to implement curriculum.
I have minors in both theology and pastoral ministry. I have taught religious education (Roman Catholic) for many years in grades 1-8. I have presented faith formation workshops for adults. I am a Sister of Holy Cross who attends to her own ongoing development in these areas through retreat, workshops, and literature.
Teaching study skills was an integral part of of teaching a variety of subjects to students in grades 6-8. Those subjects include science, history, social studies, and English/language arts (including spelling). I also assisted college students with study skills when I served as a student advisor.
I was first given the opportunity to develop my writing skills beginning in elementary school. Over the years I have come to recognize writing as an art in which I take great pride. I value correct grammar as well as a strong and diverse vocabulary. My own love for this craft has translated into successfully teaching others to write. I have taught writing in grades 5 through 8. I have also worked with college students to revise and refine their written work. I have written a great deal from formal papers to press releases to poetry to creative prose and more. I have often been asked to edit the written work produced by others. Years of formal education in content areas that require strong writing skills have certainly contributed to my ability to write well and for a variety of purposes.
