About Chloe

I have tutored children from age 5 to 13 and have tried to help students who are struggling by showing them the worth of a good education in a fun way. I believe that a good tutoring experience isn't just about the one-on-one attention that this type of service can provide but also about preparing the student to continue to do well in all of their subjects by boosting confidence and interest in school subjects wherever I can.

I apply my experiences with people from working in the service industry as well as the needs of children learned from my years as a nanny. I am great at looking at issues from a number of different angles, and I love it when I am able to find the angle that allows my student to finally understand the problem at hand.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

To get into Columbia I had to score high on either the ACT or the SAT. I opted for the ACT and used study books to tutor myself. I scored in the 95-99 percentile, with an overall score of 29. I know a number of good test taking techniques that have aided me in my studies that are helpful in tutoring others.

Algebra 1

I have tutored students in Algebra 1.

American History

As an Ivy League graduate, specializing in Political Science, I have learned and relearned the major historical events of the world and the country and am capable of reteaching these events to students in a way that will make them want to know more.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked for over a year under the guidance of a Texas certified 5th grade teacher tutoring students in the K-6th range in a variety of subjects. My work as a nanny helps me to understand the needs of children in this age range, and I have learned a variety of techniques that aid in explaining each lesson in a way that is age appropriate and as fun as possible for each student. I try to figure out each child's interests in the first few sessions so I can relate each lesson to those interests where possible to get the student motivated to do better while also attempting to understand where the student is struggling in order to find a solution to work around it. My grades in college combined with my experience and ability to work with children qualify me for this work.

English

As a child, my father drilled proper English into my head constantly. Additionally, I was an avid reader and my grasp of English is excellent. Since my father was an English teacher, he taught me to think about English in a way that is easily transferred to others when I am tutoring them.

Reading

I am a Columbia University graduate and I currently work as a freelance writer and editor. I have experience working with students to help develop an enjoyment for reading. I do this by working to improve their skills while utilizing their individual interests to develop lesson plans and choose pieces to read during sessions.

Spelling

I won the spelling bee almost every year in school as a child. I am very knowledgeable about proper spelling, rules and phonics.
