As a Communications major, I have an excellent background in Language Arts. In order for students to excel in school, a grasp of language is essential. Whether their weakness is spelling, or grammar, or how to organize and essay or a paper, I have the tools they need to succeed.
Sometimes a student may be struggling simply because of a lack of organization. I have excellent organizational skills derived from 30 years of office work and the belief that organization helps make schoolwork manageable.
In the past I have volunteered at my child's school to help elementary students with reading and math. I have also worked with autistic children at the middle school level, teaching them not only English, reading, and math, but also social skills to help them navigate their days.
I have raised a child with ADHD and as a result, have researched and implemented structures within my home and the school system to help my child succeed. I have acted as an advocate for that child, educating the educators sometimes in what works well.
In my coursework in Communications, I have studied learning styles and teaching styles and realize that not everyone learns at the same rate or in the same way. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
