About Jamie

Music has been a central part of my life for as long as I can remember. I love teaching, learning, and understanding how others learn best. I am fully certified to teach music K-12 as a highly qualified educator in the state of New Hampshire. I strongly value the one on one interaction of tutoring and private lessons and the uniqueness of that experience. All teachers love getting to know their students, but the one on one setting allows for a deeper relationship which leads a richer understanding. My favorite part of tutoring and lessons is seeing the "ah-ha" moment in a students face when they grasp a knew concept.

My primary instrument is trumpet, but I am proficient the brass family as well as piano/keyboard instruments. While at the University of New Hampshire I performed in many music department ensembles and student organized groups, frequently playing the lead and principal parts. I continue to perform at a professional level in New England and teach private trumpet lessons to local middle and high school students I also received an excellent education in music theory and ear training which I put to use instructing general music and theory courses at the high school level.

In general, I am available after school hours during the school year, in the summer I am available mornings through the evening, but I am quite flexible with scheduling. I am also available for online sessions!

I look forward to hearing from you and working together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I completed two ear training courses while at the University of New Hampshire, as well as three music theory courses. These five courses require and develop a highly trained and developed ear which leads to strong sight singing skills. My undergraduate and graduate degrees in music education prepared me to deliver music instruction which relies heavily on music literacy. My current instruction in high school music theory courses includes application of current concepts through ear training units.

General Music

I am fully certified to teach music K-12 in the state of New Hampshire. I have experience teaching and student teaching general music at the high school and middle school level. I hold a bachelors degree in music education and a masters of arts in teaching degree, both from the University of New Hampshire.

Music History

I hold a bachelor's degree in music education and a master of arts in teaching degree, both from the University of New Hampshire, which lead to my K-12 music teaching certification. While at UNH I took four music history courses, including two at the graduate level. I conducted research, wrote scholarly essays, and internalized the history of western music from the Medieval era through the 20th century. I am also well studied in contemporary and jazz music, as well as a currently gigging musician in many modern music idioms.

Sight Singing

I completed two ear training courses while at the University of New Hampshire, as well as three music theory courses. These five courses require and develop a highly trained and developed ear which leads to strong sight singing skills. My undergraduate and graduate degrees in music education prepared me to deliver music instruction which relies heavily on music literacy. I pride myself on my students ability to read music and sing music at sight.

Trumpet

Trumpet is my primary instrument. While completing my undergraduate degree at the University of New Hampshire, I was the principal trumpet player in the department, often playing the lead and principal trumpet parts in the Symphony, the Wind Symphony and the Jazz Band. I also formed a student run brass quintet at UNH which was frequently hired to perform at campus events and ceremonies. Since graduation, I continue to perform at a professional level. I am fully certified to teach music K-12 in the state of New Hampshire.
