About EMILIE

I am a retired educator with experience as a classroom teacher, teaching principal, assistant principal, and special education director. I have taught high school ecology, biology, and earth science. I taught middle school reading, language arts, math, life, earth and physical science. I also have experience as a Title I reading tutor for kindergarten through grade 4. Much of my experience was as a grade 1 and 2 looping teacher which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I believe that instruction must be relevant, and rigorous, yet individualized to meet the interests, and learning style of the student. Failure is not an option.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I worked as a Special Ed Coordinator for 10 years. I have my M.Ed. and took many classes about the Exceptional Student. In all of my educational experience I specialized in working with ADD/ADHD students. I believe in individualized instruction tailored to a student's strengths to bolster their weaknesses.

Algebra 1

As a certified Elementary Teacher I can teach all subjects k - grade 8 to include math. Most recently I taught Math to Grades 6 through Grade 9.

Biology

I have my B.A. in Biology. I taught Biology and Ecology at a private high school and Life Science at a public school. I also taught elementary science k - 6th grade.

Chemistry

I have a B.A. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I taught high school chemistry at a private college prep school. More recently I tutored an adult in college chemistry.

Cooking

I am an avid cook. I have made meals for my family for 45+ years. I like to explore using herbs that I grow myself.

Dyslexia

Throughout my 25 years of education experience I have worked with many students with Dyslexia. No one technique works for everyone, but I have had success with a variety of methods.

Trying these techniques and using a student's feedback to determine which helps is most effective. A student may also be able to tell an instructor a technique or approach that they have found to be helpful.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my M.Ed. and over 18 years of experience teaching grades 1 through middle school in all subjects. I feel confident that I can individualize instruction to help students excel in reading and language arts, science and math. Teaching a student how to study helps them be successful in all subjects. I am an experienced teacher that will "leave no stone unturned" to help a student succeed.

Elementary Science

I taught as a certified, classroom elementary school teacher for eight years which included teaching science. I also have my B.A. in Biology, and my M.Ed. I love science, ecology, and wildlife biology, and enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for it with my students.

Needlework

I have been doing embroidery since high school. I have simple projects for beginning students. I learned the art from my mom, grandmother, books, and a high school class. I enjoy wearable art as well as the traditional wall hanging.

Phonics

I worked as a first and second grade teacher for more than 8 years. I also am trained in Dibles, and Reading Recovery.

Prealgebra

As a certified Elementary Teacher I can teach all subject k - Grade 8. Most recently I taught Math to Grades 6 - 9.

Public Speaking

As a teacher, assistant principal, and principal I am a skilled communicator. I took a class in Speech in college and excelled in it.

I teach students in Public Speaking the following 5 key elements:
1. Adjust their communication to meet the needs of their audience;
2. Use an attention getting opener that also provides the audience with the topic to be addressed;
3. Speak clearly so all can hear you;
4. Summarize your main points succinctly;
5. Leave time for questions after your conclusion.

I also recommend multi-modal visual aids, and a time keeper so a talk can be adjusted to fit the allotted time.

I have taught students to use these techniques in grades K - 8, in all their subjects, especially Language Arts, Reading, and Science.

Reading

I have my M.Ed. in Elementary Education., and NH Certification in Elementary Education.

Sewing

I actively sew. I have 2 sewing machines, and also do embroidery by hand. I sew gifts for people. For example hot packs, outfits, "door snakes", doll clothes, quilts, and etc.

Special Needs

I am a retired teacher of grades K - 12. I have an M.Ed. and have also served as a principal, assistant principal and special education director. I pride myself on leaving no stone unturned to help a student be successful. I am adept at adapting instruction in reading, writing, and math to meet the particular needs of students.

I believe in individualized instruction to meet the needs of all students. Among the techniques I've used are providing highlighters to all students to encourage them to edit their own writing; partner and local community member reading; writing everyday, publishing work and sharing edited work with the local library,and emphasizing reading for meaning, etc.

Failure is not an option. There is no such thing as a special education student. They only approach the world differently. An approach or resource that meets the need of special education students also meet the needs of "regular" education students.

Study Skills

I have taught grades k through 12 and helped students learn how to study a subject according to their own strengths and weaknesses. Repetitive use of skills, as well as, experiencing a topic are only two of the techniques I've used. Discovering the elements of a subject help students to understand,learn and remember the rules and laws that govern it.

My Philosophy and techniques are summed up in the following quote:

"Tell me I forget.
Show me I remember.
Involve me I understand"

Swimming

I am a Red Cross certified WSI, and Lifeguard. I am also certified in CPR, AED and first aid.

Track & Field

Wile in high school I ran track for my school, as well as in the AAU. At that time I held the state records for the 100 meter dash and the 100 meter hurdles.

I won the NH State Meet and the New England Meet. This qualified me to compete at the U.S. Nationals at UCLA.

I also coached track and field as a teacher at St. Paul's School in Concord, NH.

Writing

Taught Middle School Language Arts Chester Academy, Chester, NH
Taught Integrating Technology Into Language Arts Instruction at Notre Dame College, Manchester, NH

Zoology

I also completed an Undergraduate Research Project on the Konza Prairie that involved Entomology, Ecology, and Zoology. I am a life long learner and an avid ornithologist.
