Hello parents and students,
My name is Om, a senior at Dartmouth College majoring in Mathematical Data Science. In terms of any goal, there are 3 categories: comfort, challenge, and unrealistic. With students, I want to push them gently into their challenge zone since all our goals lie outside our comfort zone.
Sometimes people are told as children phrases like “you are not a good fit for math” or “you weren’t born like that” or “you either have it or you don’t.” Forget that! You are in control of how well you perform. One of my previous mentors was a psychology major. He was one of the most influential people in my life. He said that it’s not about denying the nervousness; rather, it’s about accepting that it is normal and instead letting stress be your friend. Stress means you care about succeeding, better than feeling so relaxed you don’t study at all. Through hard work, the right attitude, and minimizing distractions, you are capable of excelling at any subject.

I was born and raised in Delaware, where I attended The Charter School of Wilmington. Now, I am a senior at Dartmouth College, pursuing a BA in Mathematical Data Science. I interned as a Data Engineer at the investment management giant Fidelity Investments for the past 2 summers. In high school, I was primarily interested in data science applied to chemistry. In my sophomore summer, I determined the strength of 2 similar materials and conducted an ANOVA and F-test on my experiment results. This project’s findings nominated me as a Siemens Semifinalist. I took 11 AP exams in HS and received all 4’s and 5’s, nominating me as a National AP Scholar. In addition, I took 2 post-AP Math courses and received A grades in them. I learned the secret to AP FRQs: organize your thoughts. Graders read millions of responses a day. The key to the ACT is practice, not whether you took AP Lang or AP Calc BC already. For college apps, it’s not the stories but rather how clearly you communicate experiences you feel strongly about in an organized way.

At Dartmouth, my interest in data science continued. During my freshmen summer, I worked at a part-time researcher at my college while taking classes. I read about a predictive stock price model and applied it to predicting future temperatures for regions. I chose to intern as a Data Engineer at Fidelity Investments for my sophomore and junior summer. By sophomore spring, I had completed all my core major courses with mostly A grades. After finishing my core major courses, I decided to take some computer science courses such as OOP. In addition, I dedicated 70 hours to a Data Science Bootcamp in which I learned machine learning concepts, advanced R, and MS Azure. During my first summer at Fidelity, I was part of the team building a new financial tool. I researched legacy tools, found useful features, and conducted statistical tests in MS Excel to strengthen my findings. In addition, I performed data analysis on the data dictionary for the new tool. Overall, I improved my communication skills as I explained complex data science concepts to those with no data engineering background. My second summer at Fidelity, as part of the team reporting cybersecurity data, I researched and implemented cloud-editing tools in Tableau for monthly cybersecurity data. In addition, I analyzed data in Tableau and MS Excel.

Past Tutoring Experience:
1. Volunteered as Science Ambassador in high school to tutor inner city school students for math, reading, and science.
2. At college, tutored an intro to economics course and Multivariable Statistics advanced course.
3. Guided my younger brother throughout HS and the college admissions process, and he is now at Stanford.

My research project is “Monte Carlo Weather," in MatLab, which I have been working on since June 2017. In this project, I deciphered a stock price predictive model and applied it to predicting temperatures since stock prices and temperatures depend highly on the previous day's value. I used MatLab for heavy statistical analysis using the following techniques: finding the moving average of the data, finding a Fourier series of the data, finding residuals between predicted and actual values, testing if the data is normally distributed, and generating random noise to simulate realistic data fluctuations. A weather researcher in the Mt. Everest region has requested my MatLab program to fill gaps for weather data.

College Counseling

College Counseling

Since August 2016, I have been a part-time college consultant. I provided advice on year-by-year course selection recommendations, choosing a college based on matching interests with long-term career goals, and major recommendations based on personality test results. Over the years, I have studied over 500 student profiles on those who got accepted, deferred/waitlisted, and rejected to top colleges. These profiles contained extracurriculars, GPAs, test scores, personal statements, and more. Based on these profiles and my meetings with clients, I have figured out the necessary components for an excellent package: pick one area and devote a majority of your time to that while receiving the necessary GPA/scores.

Excellent and Experienced Tutor

I had a schedules lesson with Om in regards to a project about database and analyzing dataset in my own personal perspective, which I had no idea off. Originally we a two hour lesson. The lesson went from being two hours to almost four hours. In the lesson he helped, explained and made sure that as he was helping throughout every step of the way I was also learning and understanding the process. Which I did. He helped me from scratch until I fully understood what I had to do. I would say that he prioritizes in his students learning what his helping them with but to also be able to do the work by themselves while he is watching. So this way he can watch and see if the student made any mistake to keep working on that certain mistake and if not then on to the next one. Beyond excellent tutor. If you need help with data or datasets, Om is the perfect tutor to help.
