I enjoy the creative side of life. I am an architect, teacher, musician, builder, guitar and furniture maker.

I believe all can learn, and do well in life, if allowed to explore and try different things that may excite the inner soul. I enjoy the creative side of life. I am an architect, teacher, musician, builder, guitar and furniture maker.

I believe all can learn, and do well in life, if allowed to explore and try different things that may excite the inner soul. I have had students that thought they knew exactly what they wanted to do in life, and upon graduating from high school, completely changed course. These are all valid ways to get to where we need, and more importantly, want to go. I have also had a few students who struggled terribly within a typical school structure, until they were encouraged to explore nontraditional ways to accomplish their goals.

I taught Engineering and Architectural Design at a technical high school in Vermont for eight years. My students were from grades 10, 11, 12. During that time I realized that I needed many different approaches to reach all of my students. Many of my students were from sending schools that bussed them to the school daily. There was a wide variety of interest from each of the students in the class. My approach to this interesting problem was to offer individualized instruction for all students. I would start out the year with a basic platform that allowed a later transition to a differential instruction pattern. When they all had learned some basic skills, then they were encouraged to transfer these skills to pursue an area of instruction that interested them. For instance: some wanted to design houses, some cars or boats, some musical instruments. I was less concerned about what they wanted to design rather than, had they the desire to do so. The process was generally the same for any design project: select a project; sketch the project freehand; build a model of the project or the real thing. The finished product was not as important as the process, although many of them were very well done. Some like trebuchets, ukuleles, house models, loud speaker design, even a built tiny house/cabin, were very well designed and executed.

My approach to learning is not to explain and memorize but to allow personal passions to guide excited students to explore the possibilities within reach of their potential. Even if these skills are replaced by a different occupation later, the same excitement may be realized by the student, now adult, who recalls the experience and determination required to succeed.

Guitar

I have played guitar for 40+ years. I have preformed in 4 bands (folk, bluegrass) including a duet with my wife. In the last several years I have also ventured to make guitars as a luthier, and currently have made nine acoustic guitars by hand. At HACTC I taught many interested students how to make ukuleles by hand during our musical instrument making lesson.
