Hello, my name is Doug, and I'd like to introduce myself by telling you a little bit about my education background. I am a certified Special Educator and hold a Masters degree in Education. I have had the opportunity to gain valuable student teaching experience at both the elementary and middle school level. As a special educator, much of my instruction has been one-on-one by assisting students who have a hard time following lessons along with their peers. Often, I have provided individualized special education instruction to students needing extra support in core subjects such as reading, writing, spelling, math, science, or social studies.
I have a love and passion for both education and children. I believe in, not only traditional teaching methods of providing instruction, but also creative ways of approaching a subject through the encouragement of student involvement. I believe that building upon a student’s abilities, strengths, and interests is an important strategy in helping them reach success. Homework, practice at home, and projects, can be very important to help reinforce material already taught in the classroom. This will vary based the individual student and grade. I believe that assessments are important for teachers in order to gain a better understanding of student progress, yet they do not always need to be given in the traditional way. I also believe that a strong teacher-student relationship is an important motivator for student success. And finally, I like to emphasize that learning can be fun and generally give extra incentives for student performance. The greatest moments for me are, by far, those when I witness student progress! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a state certified Special Educator and hold a Master of Education in Special Education. I have taught in the public school system for several years, with a minimum of two years in a Transition Program (or Pull-Out Program) for Emotionally Disabled students. Much of my student instruction is one-on-one lesson planning and delivery, including with those having ADD/ADHD and disabilities on the Autism Spectrum. I have developed many extra support tools and facilitated accommodations to help students reach academic success.
I have served as a Special Education Teacher, Paraprofessional, and Tutor in public schools for five years. Currently, I work for a statewide not-for-profit agency having been there for seven years. The majority of customers I assist are customers of the State Vocational Rehabilitation Agency. Many of these customers are Transition Age Youth (high school age) and seek guidance to either continue their schooling at the community college/college level or pursue employment, as well as understand benefit program(s) in which they may be enrolled.
