As long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for learning. Some might pass off an ability to learn easily as mere talent. Talent has become a concept that separates the challenged from those successful. Despite how natural some make it seem, every talent must be learned, nurtured, and maintained. The biggest problem is not the complexity of the information, but how we try to process it. The way we learn and understand concepts depend on our background, knowledge, and training.
I am a professional musician, trained in the classics for K-12 education. My main instrument is the oboe with secondary emphasis on bassoon, as well as their respective reed-making skills from raw materials. My studies include pedagogy on all major orchestral instruments up to a junior high efficiency. Instruments I have trained for College-level performances include oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, and percussion. I regularly perform the oboe, bassoon, and trumpet with the Army National Guard and freelance events.
We all have met many that do not believe in their ability to carry a tune, perform math, write an essay, or just about any other skill. While there are certainly some with severe challenges, nearly everyone can meet their goals successfully with properly dedicated effort, perspective, and guidance. Overcoming our toughest challenges are often the most rewarding moments of our lives.
This is why I also have a passion for teaching. As long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for learning. Some might pass off an ability to learn easily as mere talent. Talent has become a concept that separates the challenged from those successful. Despite how natural some make it seem, every talent must be learned, nurtured, and maintained. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed 4 years of music theory and complimentary ear training/dictation for my undergraduate degrees in music performance and education at Arkansas State University. These skills ranged from traditional Baroque to atonal 20th Century styles, intervals, and analysis through my graduate work in music. I also regularly sing with a local choir to keep my ear training skills in practice and honed.
I have taken 4 years of comprehensive music theory courses as well as independently taught 2 years of how to listen to music for non-major undergraduate university students. Analytical theory for both traditional and atonal styles were also a focus for my graduate work in music.
