"Promise me you'll never become a teacher," our father would sigh giving us a wry glance over the top of his spectacles from where he sat behind a hazy stack of perpetual blue books. My father was a born teacher--charismatic, captivating, engaging, funny, fun, well read, articulate. His students used to marvel that here was a man who knew everything. If I failed to heed his warning, it was his own fault, for it was from him I imbibed a deep, abiding love of literature and the written word.

When I was approached my senior year by graduate who was starting a academy near by, I got my first taste of teaching and fell in love with the very first day. I just loved being in a place where I was able to share what I loved best with my students. I loved the students themselves—getting to know them and seeing them grow. It was truly gratifying to see them move from staring at a blank page on the first day with crippling writer’s block to unleashing that fluid flow and seeing everything gush page after page by the end of the year. They had found their voice and were expressing themselves on paper with the same ease with which they spoke. After I graduated I went on to teach at a boarding school on Long Island where I was English teacher, coach, and dorm parent. From there I returned to my native New Hampshire where I continued teaching secondary English classes at an academy in Peterborough.

My hiatus from teaching and transition into tutoring came with the birth of my first child and the desire to work on a more part time capacity. I have worked as a tutor for students of all ages--elementary school students working on Reading and Math skills, high school students preparing for the verbal portion of the SAT, college students in need of assistance with their papers, and adults working toward their GED. During this time I have also continued to teach on a part time capacity for home school communities. What I really love about teaching is how perfectly tailored to the individual needs of the student it is. It really offers an opportunity not afforded in the classroom--to meet the student exactly where they are and strengthen the areas where they are in the most need of support.

I am available to assist in an English, ESL, or Language Arts capacity--reading, expository writing, grammar, editing, and the like. I also love history and can assist elementary school students in any subject.

I am here to help you achieve your goals and welcome your input about how I can best assist you. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have or to schedule a lesson.
