About Honor

Guiding a student to build his or her bridge to new knowledge is my passion! I get to know each student and connect the new concept to something in the student's experience. For example, I have taught the concept of slope of a line many times, but for a runner I used the example of hills on his typical route. I have found that students struggle with concepts that they cannot make personal connections with, so I work with them to forge those connections. Then I guide the student’s practice to hone their new skills and gain confidence.

I'll never forget the joy I felt while I was learning algebra! I wanted others to feel that, too. I tutored students in math and science while in high school, while getting bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical engineering at MIT, and while I worked as an engineer. I have taught engineering physics (statics) at Northern Illinois University; multi-variable calculus, consumer math, algebra, and engineering mechanics (dynamics) at community colleges in Illinois; and statistics, research methods, and technical writing at Dartmouth College. At the University of Michigan, I earned my PhD in education with a focus on how students learn math and science from example problems. I have tutored my two sons in math, science, and SAT preparation. I volunteer coached a high school robotics team for two seasons, where I taught science, math, and machining. At Dartmouth, I teach biostatistics in the online Master of Public Health program and conduct health policy research where I use statistics every day.

It delights me to help students learn math and science. I always asked my teachers, “What is this used for?” I love sharing applications with students -- that is what it is all about! Specific subjects are Algebra I, Algebra II, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, statistics, statistical programming in Stata, physics, and engineering mechanics (statics and dynamics).

Because my emphasis is connecting a new concept to a student's experience, I welcome ideas from the student or parents. I am happy to answer questions by email. Better yet, schedule a first session which is a free consultation. Let's work together to get you over your hurdles and build your confidence!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biostatistics

As part of teaching in the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program at Dartmouth College, I have taught introductory biostatistics using STATA for 7 years including workshop-format lab sessions (essentially group tutoring sessions) in applying statistical concepts. I have taught biostatistics for one additional year online, which includes tutoring students individually at a distance. My research work requires me to apply biostatistics for portions of every week, including complex descriptive statistics, regression models, survival analysis, data management, and complex graphs.

Epidemiology

As part of teaching in the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program at Dartmouth College, I have taught epidemiology for 7 years including workshop-format lab sessions (essentially group tutoring sessions) in applying concepts. I have a knack for teaching students absolute risks, relative risks, all types of study designs, and especially the challenging concepts of confounding and effect modification.

STATA

As part of teaching in the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program at Dartmouth College, I have taught biostatistics using STATA for 7 years including workshop-format lab sessions (essentially group tutoring sessions) in applying STATA. I have taught biostatistics for one additional year online with the additional challenge of teaching STATA remotely and tutoring students individually at a distance. My research work requires me to work in STATA for portions of every week, and I have programmed and debugged tens of thousands of lines of STATA code, including complex descriptive statistics, regression models, survival analysis, data management, and complex graphs.
