Centenary College Hackettstown NJ (Education)
As a special educator, I have thirteen years of experience in both elementary and secondary levels. My last position was as a tenured teacher in NJ where I taught core subjects to special education students. I provided support in general education classrooms and remediation in the resource setting. I helped many students succeed in reaching their individual goals, gain confidence in their ability to learn, and motivated them to enjoy learning. With every lesson I teach, I use multiple learning modalities to engage learners, apply helpful learning strategies and tailor lessons to each student's individual needs. I truly enjoy fostering a love of learning and watching each student progress to their fullest potential.
Primarily, I have taught third and fourth grade math. I gave my students many strategies to use as tools so they were able to remember multiple steps or difficult concepts independently.
In my previous position, I taught students with specific learning disabilities reading strategies for comprehension, accuracy and fluency. I am familiar with and have implemented programs to prepare students for standardized testing in both math and literacy.
Throughout my teaching experience I have helped many students with special needs. I also have experience using The Wilson Reading System for phonetics instruction.
My strongest teaching subjects are reading, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and writing. I especially enjoy creating innovative lessons for students that struggle in these areas. I also weave study skills and test taking strategies into my lessons.
I am a dedicated, creative and knowledgeable teacher. My main goal for each student is to build confidence, independence, sharpen skills and foster motivation and a love of learning for a lifetime. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
