About Eryka

I am an enthusiastic and patient teacher. I enjoy being prepared to instruct my students in an individualized way. I am a new mom with an adorable son, so I'm only interested in online tutoring at this time. I have access to many instructional resources; my students do not have to provide materials if they are not currently enrolled in classes. I am most effective at working with adults, but I also have experience working with children ages 10 and up.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE:

I completed my M.S. in Teaching English as a Foreign Language in 2013 at Southern New Hampshire University. Currently, I am an adjunct instructor at SNHU in the Intensive English Program and the Graduate Language Studies Department.

I have taught high-beginner to high-advanced level students in a variety of settings. My speciality is writing, reading skills, and college-readiness. I'm also available for conversational practice. While teaching reading and vocabulary-building skills, I can also teach American culture, history, politics, government, as well as basic math and science.

JAPANESE:

I graduated from Bucknell University with a B.A. in Japanese and a minor in Linguistics. I also attended the Middlebury Summer Language School of Japanese in 2008, I have worked as a Japanese tutor since then. I've been working with friends and clients to prepare them for learning Japanese for fun, work, and missionary service.

I am a HUGE anime and manga fan, and I have been for many years. I love helping people enjoy their hobbies even more by putting Japanese in an easier-to-understand context.

Currently,I'm only able to teach beginners. What I can offer is a "crash course" of sorts to help people continue study on their own or to attend classes. My goal is to provide an effective scaffolding framework for the challenges of learning Japanese.

PROOFREADING AND APA STYLE CITATION:

For the last 3 years, I have been teaching graduate students at SNHU, helping them to improve their proofreading and APA skills. I have an eye for detail, and I love proofreading work. I have proofread for native and non-native speakers of English. My turnaround time for proofreading work is pretty quick, and I will provide a detailed explanation of each change if requested.

I am very confident and familiar with APA 6th edition. I will gladly help anyone understand it and use it effectively, including resource checking.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am able to tutor in reading, writing and literature on any level, from elementary/beginner to college level.

ESL/ESOL

I currently teach advanced level ESL to graduate students at Southern New Hampshire University. I have also taught high-beginner classes and a Hi-SET Bridges class at the Nashua Adult Learning Center. Prior to this, I was the Graduate Assistant for the Institute for Language Education at the university where I teach and the ESL Writing Tutor for the Learning Center. I am confident that I can help students achieve their English goals.

Grammar

As a graduate student in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, I have spent the last two years studying the depths of English grammar. I am a competent, confident, and well-read tutor with a desire to make grammar approachable.

Japanese

I have been studying Japanese since 2007. I graduated from Bucknell University with a major in Japanese (Linguistics minor) in 2010. I spent a summer in Japan, and I attended the Middlebury Japanese Summer Language School in 2009. I have a plethora of materials available to aid students who are beginning their Japanese journey. I am confident to teach hiragana, katakana, kanji, and basic grammar, up to the intermediate level.

Proofreading

I have been a writing tutor for many years, and I also offer my services as a proofreader for professionals, both native and non-native. I am confident and skilled in the use of formal grammar, organization, and APA style and citation, for publication and thesis work.

Reading

As a graduate student in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and an ESOL Bridges instructor, I have been focusing on teaching reading strategies and competences to students for the last 2 years. I have loved reading since I was a child; to share that love with ESL and international students has been a great pleasure!

Study Skills

I have been teaching ESOL Bridges in Nashua, NH, for the last two years. In this course, I teach high-level ESOL students the academic and cultural skills necessary to succeed in an American GED/Hi-SET classroom. My speciality is listening and critical reading skills, with an emphasis on note-taking for comprehension.

TOEFL

I have been privately tutoring for the TOEFL iBT test since 2012, and I have professionally taught TOEFL preparation as a part of my curriculum at Southern New Hampshire University. My specialties include reading and writing, but I have experience teaching all four skill areas (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). I have a variety of materials at my disposal.

Vocabulary

As an ESL instructor, writing tutor, and graduate student, I am confident and proficient in the vast expanse of English vocabulary. Through exercises, outside materials, and student-provided work, I can help students and professionals expand their vocabulary, both written and spoken.

Writing

As the graduate assistant for the Institute for Language Education at Southern New Hampshire University, I am also the International Student Writing Tutor. I have been trained to help ESL students with their writing, including short essays and research papers. For the last 2 years, I have been helping students with their grammar, structure, organization, APA/MLA citation, and style in their writing.
