About Nancy

Hello all,

My name is Nancy and I'm a college graduate with a BS in biology. Though the sciences are definitely my strong point and are what I'm most comfortable dealing with for high school students, I'm happy to help with most any elementary and middle school work as well.

If you/your son or daughter has ADD/ADHD, can't seem to figure out a sufficient way to study, or just plain can't focus on schoolwork, I've got you covered. I myself have ADD. When I was younger I hated school, couldn't remember what I read, didn't know how to study, and overall couldn't stay attentive. As I've grown, however, I've taught myself many studying techniques, found easier ways to read, and learned how to avoid becoming distracted.

I've had 3-4 years of experience working as a gymnastics coach at my local YMCA, so I am used to working with even the most energy filled kids and I enjoy it very much.

Overall, I commit myself in everything that I sign myself up for and I do my very best to be successful.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I, myself, have ADHD-Inattentive and I have been prescribed Adderall for 5 years. My work setting at the YMCA has allowed me exposure to children with ADHD and it has taught how to be patient and deal with them in a reasonable way. It is easy for me to relate to them as well when thinking back to how I felt when I was a kid.

Drawing

I took 3 art classes in high school: Dimension Art, Drawing and Painting, and Advanced Drawing and Painting. I was the only student in my Advanced Drawing and Painting class that did not move on to study art in college.

Nutrition

Though I am currently a Biology major, Nutrition is actually where my passion lies. Once I get everything squared away, I actually plan to switch my major to Nutritional Sciences. I have already taken an Introduction to Nutrition course and a Nutritional Assessment course, and I have a Food Science course coming up in the fall.

Sign Language

First semester of my freshmen year of college I took an American Sign Language I class. This class taught me basic sign language, such as finger-spelling, a number of nouns, and basic communication skills. I intend to learn more advanced ASL in the summer time.

Study Skills

Upon my diagnosis of ADHD, I started to adapt new study skills to better summarize information. This was a benefit academically because my attention could be divided into several shorter time periods using a variety of study techniques rather than going through one long and drawn out process. Some of my adapted study techniques include the use of diagrams/pictures, the use of flash cards, and the use of summarizing reading information by excising wordy or less important information (and learning to identify what is or isn't important information). The most important part of the use of these methods, though, is how you organize the study material.

Quality tutor

Nancy has helped my son with his CP anatomy for most of the fourth quarter and we are pleased with the results. His grade has gone up more than ten points and he understands the material so much better. I have found Nancy to be very flexible and reliable with our tutoring times and plan to use her with a chemistry class next year. We may even get started on the material over the summer just to get
