About Robert

My name is Rob. I'm a junior at the University of New Hampshire, majoring in Linguistics and Communication and minoring in French. I'm an Eagle Scout from Connecticut, and I've worked in the Scouting program for almost all of my life in a large variety of different capacities. Most significantly, I worked as a Youth Course Director for National Youth Leadership Training, where I hired a staff of about 20 boys to coordinate and teach the week-long leadership and communication course. I worked on the staff for that course for a total of six years, teaching a different part of the course each year.

I love helping people! That's why I started tutoring kids while I was in high school! Not only do I feel very confidently in my ability to teach, but much of what I'm studying in school pertains to concepts of teaching and learning language. My classes cover social interaction, language acquisition, and public speaking. Between Scouting and tutoring, I have experience teaching "classes" ranging in size from one student to almost 80! I'm very open to questions and I love to engage with students to ensure their understanding of the subject matter.

I've studied French for over eight years, and I have a very solid handle on the language. I've delivered speeches and presentations entirely in French, and I am a qualified French language interpreter for the Boy Scouts of America.

I took two years of Public Speaking independent study in high school and have continued my study of speech and language in college. I have delivered presentations in both English and French.

I'm a college student, so when I'm not in class, my schedule is pretty open! I love working with students and determining the best way to teach difficult and new subject matter. It's a challenge for both the tutor and the student, but I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy it! Please feel free to contact me to learn more about what I study and my teaching/tutoring experience, or to schedule a lesson!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

French

Eight years of French study
Experience with public speaking in French, including four 45+ minute presentations given exclusively in French
Certified French language interpreter for the Boy Scouts of America

Public Speaking

I worked as a Youth Course Director for the Scouting program "National Youth Leadership Training." In this role, I not only delivered presentations to groups of up to 80 students, but I also coordinated about 20 other youth teachers. I studied public speaking for two years in high school, and I continue my study of the subject in college on a more analytical level: I'm majoring in linguistics with a focus in phonetics and phonology, as well as majoring in communication with a focus in language and social interaction.
