Simmons College (Master's)
I have been living in Boston for almost seven years. I am originally from Maine and went to college in Ohio. I love to travel and learn about other cultures. For that reason I love working with international students and kids and adults who are passionate about other cultures too. I can speak some French and Spanish. This summer I completed an immersion program in Spanish at Middlebury College and had a blast. I would love to meet some native Spanish speakers in the Boston area. I have a lot of experience with ESL, as I received a Master's in teaching it from Simmons College. However, I much prefer tutoring over formal classes. I also really enjoy helping people with writing and would be happy to go over essays for school. Although most of my recent experience is with adolescents and young adults, I enjoy working with young children also. I have a niece and nephew who are three and five, and I was also a mentor to two children in Roxbury. While in college, I tutored at a local elementary school. I am eager to help anyone who has the curiosity to learn! I am especially interested in language learning, as I understand the challenges associated with this. Maeve was a wonderful tutor for the English section of the GREs. She was able to make learning new vocab works interesting and more importantly, easy for me to remember! She has extensive knowledge in the English subject and was great at working with my strengths and weaknesses. If I ever need English tutoring again, I'll call Maeve.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
-I have aMaster's in Teaching ESL (2007), with student teaching completed at Watertown Middle School (primarily 6th grade), assisted students with all content classes. I helped out at after school homework club at Reiche Elementary School in Portland, Maine 2005. I tutored students in reading and writing at Wiggin Street School in Gambier, OH (2004) and tutored two students at Nativity Preparatory School in Roxbury (2010).
I love helping students with reading, writing, and vocabulary. Both my high school and college had a strong emphasis on writing. I have college level experience teaching writing, especially to non-native English speakers. The last book I read was The Girl with the Pearl Earring. I enjoy biographies and historical fiction. I also enjoy reading The Economist, The New York Times, the Boston Globe and other journals and magazines. I have also studied French and Spanish. I attended a liberal arts college, and I believe writing is a very important skill.
I have a Master's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Simmons College in Boston, MA. I have taught at two universities in Boston, Northeastern and Showa (a Japanese school) and OISE, a very well-regarded language school. I prefer tutoring to teaching because I find the students are more focused and we can develop a better relationship and concentrate on the areas the student needs most. I have mostly taught writing, conversation, test prep, and a little bit of business English.
