About Beth

I have been an elementary teacher for over 30 years. I have taught grades preschool to six and I have taught education courses at the college level to train primary teachers. I have tutored in reading and math as well as acted as a mentor for college students. I believe that the best way to learn is to understand the student's learning style and to design lessons that will build upon that learning style. Hands-on activities allow elementary-aged students to understand new concepts before applying them in a more abstract way.

I have also been a peer editor for magazines and educational materials and a technical editor for an engineering firm. I can use this skill to help high school and college students develop their writing, editing and grammar skills.
I have worked with learning disabled students in reading. I have worked with a variety of programs designed to improve the reading level of struggling readers at all ages.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified in Maine as a K- 8 teacher. I have taught for over 30 years. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership. I have training in reader's workshop, Lucy Calkins Writing, 4 Blocks Writing, and Everyday Math. I have taken courses in online education, the brain and learning. I am a primary National Board Certified Teacher. I hold a Early Childhood trainer certificate in New Hampshire.

Phonics

I hold elementary certification K - 8 in Maine. I have taught language arts to grades K - 6. The K - 2 work has included extensive work in phonics. I have also worked with the Wilson program for learning disabled students. I hold an undergraduate degree in speech therapy. This background reinforces the learning of sound/letter relationships so important for decoding skills. I have tutored in reading and phonics for children in early elementary grades.
