About Joseph

My excellent local references will display my skills working with students; tutoring, SAT prep and college admissions counseling are special strengths.

I am an experienced educator who enjoys seeing students succeed. I am patient and persistent!

I believe the best way to helping a student find success is understanding his/her needs, building trust, and knowing the student well. In every student I work with I am able to find a little bit of myself when I was a student. This makes my work joyful as well as insightful when helping students overcome obstacles in their education.

In addition to my teaching and tutoring experience, I am also state certified in special education and can offer services that will help students with special needs. This includes organizational skills and behavior modifications designed to produce success in school.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As a teacher who is NH state certified in special education, I am well aware of the difficulties students with ADD/ADHD experience while trying to have a good, productive and happy day at school.
I understand that, often, medication helps students with this difficulty. However, I am a trained educator in the area of behaviorism and can help students examine, analyze and change unwanted behaviors (such as organizational skills, behavior in the classroom, study reinforcements, etc).
I am adept at analyzing a student's behavior, understanding what behavior needs to be changed, and how to help students be better organized. I have helped many students by creating behavior plans for them and helping them attain better success in school.

College Counseling

I have six years experience as the Director of College Counseling at The Portledge School in Locust Valley, NY. Portledge School is a college preparatory school where 100% of its graduates go on to 4 year colleges and beyond. I assisted students and their parents in the highly complicated college admissions endeavor including college selection, writing the college application essays, interview preparation and college visits. I have had an article published by CollegeView.com which I will be glad to share with you at your request.

Music History

As a social studies teacher I am very interested in cultural history as well as political and economic history. For two years I taught a musical history unit that I designed myself. My classes listened to and learned about music in approximately 30 nations and/or regions of the world. We examined the instruments used, the influences in their music (both on themselves and other cultures) and the cultural aspects the music impressed or reflected upon each nation or region of the world. I taught the concept that a nation's or region's musical history is an exciting and entertaining way to learn about cultures and their ideals, customs, forms of government, etc.

I have also weaved music into a variety of social studies lesson plans, particularly southern "race" music that was banned by radio stations during the Civil Rights Movement, protest folk music that pervaded the Viet Nam war era, music of The Great Depression, early American patriotic music of the 18th and 19th century, and the earliest forms of African music that influenced virtually all other forms of modern music.

SAT Reading

I have tutored students in the SAT reading portion both individually and in a school setting (Cocheco School of Technology and the Arts) and can supply references for both.

I am a certified and HQT teacher (social studies and special education). I hold a masters degree in counseling and am currently employed at a private boarding school in Milton, NH. (References available.) I have over 30 years experience working with students.

Social Studies

I am a NH state certified teacher in social studies with Highly Qualified Status (HQT). My philosophy or "mission" as a teacher in this subject is to show how relevant and important history, economics, sociology, etc. is to everyday life.

My lesson plans are always designed to illustrate this. For example, instead of just a boring lecture about income taxes, I have my students actually fill out tax forms. Or, instead of just talking about whether or not WalMart is good for a community I appoint everyone in the classroom to be an official member of their community and then we role-play the issue in class. Or, rather than just have you read about how a bill becomes a law, I appoint you as chairman of a House Committee investigating a bill and have you interact with other class members who are appointed Senators and House Representatives, etc.

Although I can't really do this in a one-on-one tutoring situation, it should give you an idea of my passion for teaching this subject and my desire to make social studies more meaningful and relevant to individuals.

Special Needs

I am a NH state certified Special Education teacher. My first job in this area was a Behaviorist in the Kittery, Maine school district where I worked individually with students in helping them observe, analyze and change their behavior in ways that would help them be happier and more successful in school. Following that, I served as a special education para-educator (while I pursued my teaching certificate) in the Rye, NH Middle School. I assisted students with special needs in their academic classrooms. Finally, I spent two years teaching social studies in an alternative school setting for students with special needs.

Study Skills

As an experienced teacher, I know keys to success for students. Organization of time, materials and assignments is crucial to being a good student. As everyone is uniquely different when it comes to matters such as these, I can tailor a study skills program that will help you be a more successful student.

I use a specific method for teaching students how to read assignments with more clarity and understanding. I can help you develop good note-taking skills. I can also help you keep things in order with weekly tutoring sessions designed to go over each week's work and your performance in school. This includes test and quiz prep and working on individual assignments.
