About Brenda

I am a NH licensed middle and high school math teacher who has tutored students from middle school through college in PreAlgebra, Algebra I and II (regular and Honors level), Geometry, and PreCalculus, and Calculus. In addition, I have also tutored ESOL students in helping them to improve their comprehension of the English language. I was employed for two summers at a local university as a tutor in their summer ESOL program. I am also CRLA certified as a tutor which means that I have learned specific techniques and strategies to employ in tutoring (which is different from teaching), as well as the learning theory to employ when working with students to maximize my level of effectiveness. I have actually taught other students these techniques so that they can become peer tutors.

What does this mean for your student? It indicates that I will actively listen to your student as they describe their difficulty, that I will carefully assess their current level of understanding. In the area of math, I will help them to create their own level of understanding through the development of a solid comprehension of the "math behind the math." This means they will go beyond simply memorizing steps in order to find solutions. My goal in working with your student is that they can successfully complete their work independently upon the completion of the tutoring session. This in turn, will increase their level of confidence which can have a tremendous impact on how they perform on assessments. I also help students deal with test anxiety (which plagues many students in math) and teach strategies for them to utilize in preparing for assessments.

With ESOL students, I tailor my sessions to their specific needs. For example, I currently have a student who is trying to pass an exam to become a licensed real estate agent. I am currently working to help her understand the specific vocabulary involved in real estate transactions along with other basic English vocabulary. I address all aspects of learning English including reading comprehension, writing, grammar and speaking the language. I adapt my lessons to whatever the student would like to focus on, therefore each lesson is different for every student.

I enjoy working with students of all ages and abilities. My students enjoy working with me as well, many indicating that I am very easy to relate to, that I am not intimidating to work with and am very patient. Some of the reviews of previous students/parents include the following comments:

From a parent:
--"In the past, Stephanie never understood math very well and hated math classes. Since she has worked with you, not only have her grades improved but she is actually asking to take an Honors math course next year".

From a math student:
--"I have had that concept taught to me four different times in past courses and it is only now that I really understand what it means. No one really explained why before and now it makes sense".

Though I cannot guarantee your child will suddenly enjoy math, I hope to at least make them better able to understand this subject by building a foundation that will encourage greater success now and in future math courses.

From an ESOL student: "Thank you for helping me with my language learning. It is easier to talk with people now and they understand what I say. You are a wonderful teacher."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I am a licensed high school teacher who has taught and tutored students from high school to college in concepts that are tested on the ACT Math exam. I am knowledgeable regarding the content, as well as the strategies that can be used to help students maximize their scores. I familiarize students with the format and types of questions on which they will be tested by using various practice exams that also helps them to develop a sense of timing so that they can complete more of the exam.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra I at the high school level for four years and tutored college students in this subject for a year and a half. I am certified as highly qualified by the State of NH in high school math having passed the Praxis I and II levels in Math. Having worked in this subject area for many years, I understand the typical difficulties that students have with specific concepts involved in Algebra I and have developed strategies to help students avoid making errors and techniques in teaching the material which breaks down the material to promote greater ease in comprehension.

Algebra 2

I am considered to be highly qualified to teach Algebra II at the high school level since I have successfully completed the Praxis I and II exams for the State of New Hampshire. In addition, I have taught Algebra II for four years as a high school math teacher and have tutored students at the high school and college level in this subject for eight years.

I have a solid knowledge of the content involved, as well as a solid understanding of the typical difficulties students have with specific concepts. This has allowed me to develop successful strategies to use with my students that help them to avoid making errors, while deepening their level of understanding by demonstrating how to determine solutions using various methods.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with ESOL students in the past, in individual tutoring sessions, as well as in group settings. I worked as a tutor at UNH Manchester in their summer program for two summers. I offered instruction in listening, reading, grammar, writing, and speaking English for students and adults from many different countries. The focus was to assist individuals to function in a culture which is often quite different from their native land.

I also offered workshops involving strategies to use in helping ESOL students master math courses taught in English at this university. In addition, I taught a course at UNH Manchester in which several sessions were focused on teaching others how to work with ESOL students to help them be successful in their school courses. I am knowledgeable in helping ESOL students develop study skills that will assist them in preparing for classes and completing tests.

I am aware of some of the specific language difficulties in learning English dependent upon one's native language and differences in writing styles that cause difficulties, (especially for college students). This requires very individualized plans which I am able to create for those whom I tutor.

Geometry

I have successfully taken the Praxis I and Praxis II exams in math which involved questions in Geometry. In addition, I successfully completely two graduate level courses in Geometry and Geometric Proofs. I also taught Geometry for several years using a constructivist approach where the students created their own understanding of theorems through hands-on activities using protractors and compasses. I have tutored students in Geometry for several years in the past and continue to do so currently with several clients.

Praxis

I have taken both the Praxis I and Praxis II exams in math and successfully passed both levels. I have been a math teacher for four years in the subject areas tested on the Praxis I and have taken many college courses in math at the undergraduate and master's level-in most courses I have received an "A" at the completion of the course. I am a professional math tutor who has worked extensively with college level students for many years including preparing adults in taking the various levels of the math Praxis exams. I am familiar with the content and format of the exam. I can share strategies with you to help you find solutions accurately and efficiently.

Prealgebra

I believe I am qualified as an instructor in Pre-Algebra due to the fact that I have successfully taken the Praxis I and II exams in NH and have been certified as highly qualified in middle school and high school mathematics.
These exams test Pre-Algebra concepts. In addition, I completed a teaching course at UNH Manchester which required the students to work in a classroom as well as attending classes. I chose to work in a Manchester middle school classroom where I was focused on working with students who needed individualized attention due to either being more advanced than their classmates or needed remedial work. I worked in this classroom for a semester.

In addition, 6 or 7 years ago, I audited a course at UNH Durham entitled How to Teach Middle School Mathematics which involved learning various techniques in presenting math concepts to students at the middle school level.

Precalculus

I have successfully passed the Praxis I and II tests in math in NH, therefore I am certified as highly qualified in high school math which includes the area of Pre-Calculus. In the past as a college math student, I had worked as a class-link tutor in Pre-Calculus at the University of New Hampshire in Manchester for three semesters which involves attending each class and assisting the students during class. It also included organizing study groups for students. Four years later I returned to this University to tutor math students, many in the area of Pre-Calculus. This has allowed me to develop a fairly deep level of understanding of the concepts involved and to comprehend the typical issues students have with the material. I have developed many strategies to use with students to help them work through these difficulties so that they can be successful in mastering Pre-Calc.

SAT Math

The math section of the SAT involves content studied in various high school math courses which I have taught and tutored for many years.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a math that is typically taught in two different high school courses; the trigonometric concepts are initially introduced in Geometry and then further explored and utilized in practical applications in Pre-Calculus. I have successfully passed the Praxis I and II exam for the State of NH and therefore the State has certified that I am highly qualified to teach middle school and high school mathematics. Geometry and Pre-Calculus is taught in high school. I have taught Geometry in high school for several years and have tutored students in Pre-Calculus at the college and high school level for eight years. I have a solid knowledge of Trigonometry and have developed many techniques to make understanding the concepts involved easier.

Writing

I am very skilled in writing and editing as indicated by the results on my GRE's which I completed in order to begin a Master's program. My reading comprehension and writing scores were both in the mid 90th percentile range.
