My name is Melissa and I am a licensed high school science teacher. I have previously taught 9th and 10th grade science and math. I mainly tutor Biology and Algebra however, I have also taught SAT math prep, physical science, and other life science courses (anatomy, ap biology etc). Melissa is tutoring my 8th grader who is being homeschooled. She tutors Introductory Physical Science and Algebra 1. She is extremely well-prepared and communicates her expectations well. She is patient, knowledgeable and conscientious. I highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Northeastern University. I have taught Biology since graduating in 2004 until 2011. I also hold a Massachusetts state teaching license in Biology. I have also passed both of the New Hampshire state teachers exams in Biology to obtain a teaching certification in NH.
I have taught middle school and high school physical science since 2006. I have taught this subject in accordance with Massachusetts state curriculum and the MCAS exams. I have also homeschooled this subject. While homeschooling, we performed labs and watched lab videos to teach concepts.
I have tutored prealgebra for 4 years at a Sylvan Learning Center.
In my 5 years of teaching, I mainly taught high school freshmen. Students would come into my classroom not knowing how to organize notebooks, how to study, how to take notes, etc. I needed to create strict guidelines for study skills at the beginning of the year and then give them some freedom to try to organize themselves in the middle of the year to learn independence.
In addition, I taught study skills at Sylvan Learning Center for two years. I then became the director of education at my center and had to train tutors on how to teach study skills, modify our study skills program, and communicate with classroom teachers and learning center tutors.
