Carolyn is doing a wonderful job engaging my son in a subject he'd rather avoid. She's very kind and has a calm demeanor. She has a great understanding of visualizing and verbalizing skills. We are very happy!
My son REALLY enjoys working with Carolyn B. After the first meeting he said to me, "Isn't it weird how you can just meet someone for the first time and they are already making such a difference in your life?" After the second meeting, he was so excited to get going with his homework that he spent another hour working on it because he was so excited about what he had learned during his time with her. She was quick to figure out his learning style and has motivated him to challenge himself to become a better reader. We feel blessed to have the opportunity to have her work with our son and would highly recommend her to anyone else that is seeking a tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a trained Lindamood Bell instructor in LiPS and Visualizing and Verbalizing as well as the math program On Cloud Nine. I am a Certified Wilson Reading System instructor and have completed training in Framing Your Thoughts which was also designed with the Dyslexic in mind. All these programs were scientifically proven to be effective with students who are dyslexic. My 20 plus years of teaching students with learning disabilities how to read and write brings to the table a wealth of knowledge of reading instruction and the struggles of reading disabilities. I hold my masters in Learning Disabilities which includes students with dyslexia.
I have been an elementary school teacher for 25 years. In this position I have taught all content areas to grade 5. All of my teacher certifications are current and evaluations stellar. Most important is my understanding of how learners learn and the importance of developing metacognitive stills students need to become proactive learners.
I have 25 years of teaching reading to students from elementary grades to middle school. I earned my Master's Degree in Learning Disabilities with a focus on reading development. Most of my professional development over the years has revolved around reading acquisition.
I have taken all the courses that Lindamood-Bell offers as well as become certified as a Wilson Reading Teacher. I currently employed as a Learning Disabilities Teacher providing specialized instruction in reading. Most of my students gain over a year in reading progress during the 10 months of instruction I provide using an Orton-Gillingham philosophy of teaching reading.
I have taught special needs children over the past 25 years. This experience ranges from cognitively impaired to learning disabled. I have many professional development hours, graduate studies and certifications demonstrating my specialty in Learning Disabilities. I use scientifically proven practices with my students as they learn to read, write and compute. More important is teaching children to think-to think through their problems and have the strategies to solve them. My skill as a teacher includes all the best practices when developing a learner.
