My method of teaching involves helping students learn how to learn. Rather than learning how to just regurgitate memorized information, with me students learn how to use critical thinking skills to find answers and thereby better retain the information that they learn. I very much apply the Socratic Method of asking the student questions to guide them in the right direction and help them learn how to ask those same questions on their own, thereby not only learning the subject material at hand, but also learning how to apply those same learning skills to future subjects that they will study.
I have a total of 124 college credits, but have not completed my degree yet. I have attended Liberal Arts Colleges, so my background is well rounded. My specific area of study has been Secondary and Special Education as well as History. My main skills lie in teaching reading, writing, history, political science, government, and social subjects ie., sociology, social action and justice. I am also able to tutor basics in math and science at the elementary level. I have experience working in a variety of fields, including being a substitute teacher in the Manchester School District. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
