Calvin College; Grand Rapids, MI (EdD)
Good day! I am highly and uniquely qualified to tutor your son, daughter, or you! Not only do I have years of experience as a journalist, newspaper columnist, and Managing Editor of a chain of newspapers in Michigan, but also as a grant, freelance, and technical writer and editor. Additionally, I have professional editorial and proofreading skills with a company here in NH that specializes in publishing secondary and college-level educational materials.
As a teacher, I taught for a number of years in inner-city Grand Rapids, MI for the federally-funded Upward Bound program, which addresses the needs of disadvantaged teens who have college aspirations. Among the courses I taught were ACT Prep, Study Skills, and a host of other English and Social Studies Courses, including Government and Consumer Economics. Since moving here to New Hampshire, I have achieved not only my teacher Certification in English and Social Studies, but also "Highly Qualified" teacher status.
Recently, I was employed for several years scoring numerous state-standardized tests for a national Educational Assessment corporation in Dover NH, and also worked on a national project involving new Common Core testing standards.
I'd be delighted to help any student who struggles with challenging course work or college prep testing and who would benefit from one-on-one tutoring, as well as those who seek support in writing those all-important college application essays!
My students seemed to always enjoy my classes and found me to be not only consistently positive, but also enthusiastic, creative, and flexible. I even have letters of recommendation from former students!
I look forward to having the opportunity to meet with and inspire you or your son or daughter. Good day! I am highly and uniquely qualified to tutor your son, daughter, or you! I hired Katrina to help me achieve a needed score for the ACTs, specifically in the area of reading. Her warm and friendly personality made me feel comfortable within minutes of our meeting. It was evident in my very first session with her that she has a wealth of experience in writing, reading, English and test tutoring. Katrina is extremely knowledgeable and organized. She provided me with structured homework assignments, allowing me to gain confidence and progress in my abilities. I looked forward to each session with Katrina, as I knew she was completely focused and dedicated to my goals. She gave me tips, strategies and techniques to ensure my success. Katrina even helped edit my college essay! I am thrilled to report that my score in reading went up 8 points! I attribute this success entirely on the tutoring I received from Katrina. If you are looking for tutoring in language arts and reading with someone who is an expert on the topic, passionately committed to your success and fun to be with, Katrina is your only option! She is amazing!
Katrina worked with my daughter on SAT prep. She was incredibly flexible working around my daughter's crazy sports schedule. My daughter immediately felt comfortable with her and feels ready to take on the SAT thanks to Katrina's tips and confidence building. I highly recommend her!
Katrina has helped me with my college essays and other writings many times. She gets a great personality and is very responsible for her job. She always gets back to my request as soon as possible and puts all her efforts to make me understand the logic and reason behind every small correction and improvement. I feel every happy to work with her and I am also looking forwards to meeting her again. She is the best choice, I believe!
I recently hired Kate for SAT prep tutoring and I couldn't be more pleased. I started late in preparation for the test, seeing I only had about 6 weeks or so, but that didn't seem to phase Kate. She immediately jumped on board and made the most out of the time we had. We analyzed my previous scores and discovered what my weaknesses and strengths were. From that point on, Kate developed practice tests, lists of important vocabulary words to know, passages to read and answer questions, and tips to help me on the test day. Each session was filled with hard work but laughs as well. Kate is a pleasure to be around and made studying enjoyable by making up examples and saying to help me remember things. If I had to choose the most important skill I took out of this, it would be my writing skills. Seeing Kate has a background in English and writing, therefore her expertise was extremely helpful. I walked into the SAT feeling confident that I could write an amazing essay because of the practice and help I had received. As Kate said, she was my cheerleader all along the way, and knew I would do great! Although I haven't found out my SAT scores yet, I know my score went up dramatically. Even after tutoring was finished, I still wanted to visit Kate because of how great she is. Couldn't be more thankful for meeting and working with her.
Katrina was hired to help with several college research papers, one which was overdue. I had very little time in which to research, outline, and compose these papers. I was so overwhelmed that I wasn't able to make progress. Katrina quickly assessed the situation and helped prioritize and establish the foundation of each of the projects. Within a short amount of time Katrina was able to help me muscle through these projects. I was feeling completely lost, but Katrina moved me through the process in a logical and orderly fashion, and her calm demeanor and sage advice kept me from panicking. I am so grateful. In the future I plan on hiring Katrina well in advance of deadlines to help organize and polish my writing assignments. I HIGHLY recommend her!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received an "A" in Reading Strategies in college as I pursued (and achieved) my Teaching Certificate in Michigan. I also taught Study Strategies as an Adjunct Professor at University for Upward Bound high school students; teaching freshmen how to parse educational materials for maximum benefit.
