About Thomas

GRE tutoring: I prepared rigorously for the GRE and scored in the 87th percentile for Math, 98th percentile for Verbal and 81st percentile for Writing. I would be happy to share my official ETS scores via e-mail attachment. I am confident that my method of preparation allowed me to achieve my goals for standardized testing. Although this sort of testing can feel like a forced march, a good score can catch the eye of graduate admissions counselors, increase your chances for admission and set you up for a bigger financial aid package upon admission (often, merit aid is determined by some combination of undergraduate GPA and test scores). I can attest to this from my own experience in the graduate admissions process. My scores helped me gain admission to graduate schools at Cornell, U Chicago, and Duke (chose Duke in the end). I have experience tutoring through WyzAnt and with tutoring companies in the Raleigh/Durham and Boston metro areas.

SAT Math Tutoring: I consider myself the SAT Math tutor for the "non-math" person. In other words, I focus on helping students overcome math anxiety, learn the process and logic of math-based thinking, and especially master the techniques and shortcuts of the SAT Math section.

German tutoring: I performed very well as an undergraduate German student (4.0 in-major GPA, top student of my graduating class) and I have lived and worked on two separate occasions in Berlin. I started learning German in 2001 as a complete novice, and through some luck and a lot of hard work, I achieved near-native fluency. I've lived through the entire experience of learning German as a foreign language, which I believe makes me particularly qualified to tutor the language from start-to-finish, where ever the finish line happens to be for you!

In the Spring of 2012, I completed a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University. I am trained as an environmental economist but I enjoy working with students in one-on-one learning environments, hence my motivation to continue tutoring. I'd like to offer my services to students whose needs match my qualifications. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

German

I have a Bachelor's degree in German Language and Literature (4.0 in-major GPA, top student of my graduating class) and I have lived and worked in Berlin. I started learning German in 2001 as a complete novice, and through some luck and a lot of hard work, I achieved fluency. I welcome students at all levels of German mastery to work on grammar, syntax, vocabulary and pronunciation. I have nine months experience tutoring independently in the Boston area, and am happy to have found WyzAnt as another way to reach students.

GRE

I prepared rigorously twice for the GRE, and scored in the 87th percentile for Math, 98th percentile for Verbal and 81st percentile for Writing. I would be happy to share my official ETS scores via e-mail attachment.
