Updated: Experienced AP US History, AP Lit, & SAT Writing tutor now accepting students. I had taken a couple years to focus on my own writing work, but am open to new students depending upon subject area focus and student level/need.

I possess a wealth of experience both teaching and developing challenging, interesting curriculum for Language Arts and Social Sciences. Courses taught at the high school level include: Reading, AP Literature, AP US History, Honors World History, and Honors English 9-10, and SAT Prep.

I also taught a specialized academic elective geared towards developing college-going cognitive and learning skills, culminating with SAT/ACT preparation and the dreaded college essay. One area of particular expertise I possess is transforming a "run of the mill" college entrance essay into a dynamic, page-turning narrative.

I found the key was to make the writing and reading content relevant and interesting for my students. Too often, the student of 2018 confronts challenging material and cannot connect it to their life. By first drawing out those connections, we can delve into the types of critical thinking, writing and analysis that characterize the successful college-going student. I was always a vocal proponent of students developing their own voices and getting out of their seats! Simulations and academic games challenging students to think, debate, write about it, and write some more, were commonplace. This is not our grandparents' classroom anymore.

While I was a certified teacher in Florida, I now work in the business world in Bedford NH and live in Peterborough NH with my family.

I also bring a coach's mindset to the tutoring dynamic. My job is not to spoon feed answers; rather, I engage active discussion utilizing Socratic methodology. I am results oriented, and will push you to accept nothing less than what you are capable of, no matter your current level.

My rates are flexible, contingent upon student need, content area, location, and financial circumstance. I am available for 1-2 weeknight sessions and 1 weekend session--and always flexible to meet the demands of your schedule.

History

American History,

American History

My American History expertise includes teaching the AP US History course last year. My syllabus included academic games and simulations to help modernize the content and make it relevant, peaking student interest. I integrated intensive writing instruction into the course, which is the most fundamental necessity for end-of-year AP test success. Writing is also the cornerstone of a strong, analytical understanding of history, important for students of all levels and types of history. Finally, a nice perk is that I took and passed the test myself, not too long ago, earning a top score of 5 (out of 5). This earned me the maximum possible number of college credits.
Government & Politics,

Government & Politics

While I double-majored in History and taught history courses at the H.S. level ranging from Honors World history to AP American History, I also took and passed the AP Government and AP US History tests not so long ago, earning 5's on both (highest possible score) Additionally, the main focus of lower level social studies courses I taught (Honors World History/American History) was integrating contemporary politics and government discussions, calculated to increase student understanding of continuities through history and connections to contemporary debates/policies.
Religion,

Religion

My religious education background includes 13-years of intensive Bible study via my academic career in Catholic schools, where religious education was a mandated part of the curriculum each year. In addition, the curriculum required comprehensive study of Jewish history and world religions, including Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Atheism, and Confucianism. As an undergraduate college student, I took courses including Byzantine History, Native American history and culture, and Anglo-Caribbean literature, which included close study of Yoruba, vodou, and Pentecostal Christianity. My graduate focus was Caribbean, Southern, and Afro-Southern literature, which also focused on Afro-Southern spirituality (protestant Christianity and the black Church), vodou, and Santeria in Cuba. Finally, as an Honors World History teacher, I integrated close studies of Reformation Christianity (Calvinism, Lutheranism, & Anglicanism), pre and post-Reformation Roman Catholicism, early Christianity, Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Coptic and apocryphal traditions, West African polytheism, Islam (both Sunni origins and Shiite reactions), Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Hinduism, Mithraism, and early pre-Abrahamic polytheistic traditions, including those of Egyptian and Mesopotamian peoples. My religious knowledge includes both textual backgrounds of all mentioned faiths, as well as cultural and historical interpretations within varied contexts.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

My teaching background includes Honors World History, AP US History, and tutoring experience in World Studies, an ELA/Social Studies hybrid course. In addition, my background writing innovative middle and secondary school curricula also included a strong focus on integrating writing/reading content into social studies content and vice versa--history and social studies content into English, honors English, and AP Literature courses. I still hold a State of Florida 6-12 social studies teaching certification, as well as having taken AP Government and AP US History as a student. My undergraduate degree included a History double-major, and my English graduate coursework focused on American and Caribbean literatures, with an intensive focus on post-colonial and cultural studies, both of which are implicitly and explicitly inclusive of social studies content.
World History,

World History

I taught Honors World History to 10th graders at the high school level, where I utilized simulation games, discussion of contemporary events, lively debate, and creative writing to make the content interesting and real for them. Coming from an AP/Language Arts background, I believe that strong reading and writing integration is necessary in history. Students should be reading texts, narratives, and journal entries from the day, and even creating their own to bring the past to life. World literature that appeared in my English courses ranged from the Baghavad Gita to Dante's Inferno, the Epic of Son-Jara (West African Text) to Declaration of Independence. Additionally, I taught AP US History, tutored AP Human Geography, and also possess an extensive background in world religions, which are central to any coherent study of world history and culture.

Terrific Tutor

My son had his first lesson with Mike today and they covered a lot of ground. We selected Mike because of his experience teaching AP Literature as well as expertise on the reading and writing portions of the SAT exam. He is congenial and easy for my son to talk to, explains what is expected and is quite thorough and detailed in his assessment of what needs to be worked on. We are very happy to have signed on with Mike and anticipate growth and development in our son's writing ability as well as improvement in his SAT scores on the next exam. Also, his location is very convenient and Mike has been very amenable to accommodate my son's busy schedule.
