About James

I've been teaching geography and environmental science for 8 years, as well as teaching geographic information systems (GIS), and environmental analysis with remote sensing satellite data. I also teach cultural environmental geography and sustainability. I have a love of writing and enjoy tutoring students in essay and report writing as well. I've published articles in national and international geography, ecology, and environmental science journals, a book chapter on culture and the environment in Latin America, and an environmental science lab manual.

Geography and environmental science are in our lives moment to moment, not remote abstract concepts. Observing and understanding the basic science around us every day is my entry into teaching and tutoring. I love geography and environmental science and environmental data analysis; I use my enthusiasm for these subjects to help students gain a better understanding of them whether it's getting familiar with basic concepts or advanced theory and analysis. Well organized, clear writing that accomplishes its purpose is also something that I enjoy teaching and supporting. As a writer and speaker I practice the fundamentals of written and oral communication continuously and have a wealth of experience and knowledge to help improve my students writing and communication.

As a teacher and a tutor I start where my students are and build confidence and knowledge from there. I've learned teaching skills and learning concepts through courses and workshops while a graduate student and continued after becoming a university faculty professor. Our tutoring sessions will be focused on building from the student's current knowledge to achieve their individual goals. In our first session we will review your goals, assess where you are on the way to meeting those goals, and make a plan for achieving your goals. I am happy to help students who need a little tutoring help to get them through a tough topic or a short-term goal, as well as to develop long-term plans to achieve broader academic or professional success.

I have B.A., M.A., and PhD degrees in geography and physical geography, with minors in biology, ecology, and environmental studies. I've taught classes and tutored students in physical and environmental geography, environmental science, conservation, environmental impact analysis, statistical analysis, geographic information systems, cartography, and remote sensing. These courses have included covering atmospheric science, weather and climate, water resources, ecosystem ecology, environmental ethics and policy, interactions between culture and the environment, environmental regulations and reports, and analysis of environmental data. I've conducted original research in forest ecology and management, environmental history, forest fire ecology, and environmental change related to management practices and policies. I have supervised student research in biogeography and forest ecology, landscape ecology, wildlife ecology, and how these are affected by land use and management practices.

I have taught introductory and advanced courses in physical and human geography as well as courses in related areas of environmental science. As a geographer my academic experience, knowledge, and skills cross a number of disciplines and areas of specialization. My course work, professional activities, and teaching provide an in-depth background in environmental science and ecology as affected by human land management. This experience allows me to help students just beginning to broadly understand the concepts of geography and environmental science as well as those seeking to understand complex processes or develop specific technical skills in GIS, remote sensing, or spatial data analysis.

As a professional and a student I have studied and practice the art and science of writing. I began publishing my written work in geography as a student and now teach my students to write following the same principles of effective writing that I learned and continue to practice in my own writing. I've published 8 articles for scholarly journals, 5 technical reports for consultants and government agencies, a book chapter, and a student laboratory manual. I teach my students that every piece of writing has a purpose and an audience, then practice implementing fundamental techniques of effective communication to achieve that purpose with that audience. Writing is a process of building a message that can be accomplished incrementally, with frequent checks to make sure the building is going well, and the message is staying on track. I work with my students and guide them through this process in a collaborative way, providing feedback and suggestions throughout the process.

I have experience teaching and tutoring students in introductory and advanced GIS skills and concepts, as well as cartography, and remote sensing. I have taught GIS and related concepts as well as applied GIS skills, GIS data acquisition, formatting, and storage, vector and raster data file formats and topology, data interpretation, display, and mapping, geospatial analysis, and spatial statistics. I regularly use GIS, remote sensing, and spatial data analysis in most of my other teaching and in my own geographic and environmental research. I primarily use and teach using ESRI ArcGIS and ERDAS Imagine software; however, I am familiar with several other software packages and can adapt lessons, practice exercises, and workflows for other software if needed.

I love teaching and helping students learn about the environment, geography, and physical science generally. My greatest reward comes when I know my students have reached their goals and succeeded.

Please contact me to see if I can help you meet your goals. I'm happy to talk about what we can work on, or suggest a different route if we learn I'm not the best tutor for you and your specific goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Geography

I have bachelor's and graduate degrees (MA and PhD) in geography, 8 years teaching experience, and over 10 years consistently publishing articles in geographic journals and books.

GIS

I have completed over 18 hours of university course work in GIS courses during my bachelor's and graduate degree programs in Geography. I have taught introductory and advanced courses in GIS at the university level. I use GIS technology and skills in my professional work on a regular basis.
