I have a wealth of experience tutoring and teaching English both privately and in a University setting. Assisting students with improving their writing skills and reading comprehension is my area of strength, as I possess an Advanced Writing Certificate from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and have logged extensive hours volunteering in the University's Writing Center, particularly helping international students. What I love most about tutoring is seeing the look on their faces when they reach that, "Ah ha, I got it!" moment. It's a feeling of helping others that makes me a passionate educator. No area of reading, writing, or language testing is too challenging for me.
I possess a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from St. Paul, Minnesota's Metropolitan State University, a Master of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, an Advanced Writing Certificate from the latter, and am currently enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts creative writing program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Perhaps just as important as my credentials and accreditation is my ability to communicate with young learners and connect with them, allowing me to understand them and them to understand me. All the experience and education in the world is virtually worthless unless one can apply it in a real world setting, a place where I have had success. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
