About Edward

Language and culture became an integral part of my world view back in grade school. As a result of that interest, I entered college and devoted my time and talents to the international community, primarily focused on Japan. Through these interactions, I've either been student or teacher constantly having to learn to understand new things.

This culminated in my time as an undergrad student in Japan where I gained tutoring experience with English individiually, at an English school, and a cram school. I liked it so much that I added a TESOL certification to my repertoire in university so that I could travel to Japan post-graduation as an English teacher. I proceeded to work as a ALT in Hiroshima for three years through the JET Program. There not only did I have classes, but many opportunities to work with teachers and students one-on-one to help their English.

Uniquely, because other ALTs also wanted to learn Japanese, I assisted many of them on their journey towards mastery. This kept me from taking the basics for granted and helped me to gain a deeper understanding of Japanese.

Specifically, I had three years of formal study of Japanese. One of those years was abroad in the city of Shizuoka. The first two though were at University of Nebraska at Omaha. I have since passed the Kanji Kentei (Proficiency test) level 6, and the Japanese Language Proficiency Test's highest level: the N1.

I have spent an extensive amount of my life with the written word: blogging, teaching, and short stories. Originally, I became a writer to become a better translator but have found myself enthralled with it. I am currently working on a couple novels with hopes of publication in the near future. Having been involved with Nebraska Writer's Workshop now for two years, I have learned that writing is a journey where even the masters are still learning new skills.

I look forward to assisting fledgling writers and Japanese Language enthusiasts along their journey to their next level.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
