About Robert

I have a Special Education degree with an emphasis in Mild/Moderate Mental Handicaps. I've been teaching for approximately 19 years. I've taught in a middle school and now in hospital systems where students are receiving long-term medical care yet still must receive an education. I have been their teacher in a unique facility where students receive a lot of one-on-one attention, getting help with various subjects ranging from Geometry to Algebra, Biology to Chemistry, and in all levels of English. There really isn't any subject I haven't dabbled in since my students come from all walks of life and all ability levels, weakly-skilled to gifted.

I am easygoing and easy to comprehend. My own personal drive for success translates to others and others can tell that I am serious about meeting goals and push students to do the same. My students respect my casual, yet direct approach. I believe in each and every youth for we all have potential, hidden or obvious. As a fellow learner myself, there must be mutual respect between teacher and learner such that the teacher still has room to learn and the learner has things to teach.

If I did not have to give a portion of my proceeds to WyzAnt, I'd do all my tutoring for $25 to $30/hour. Please understand that I do have to pay WyzAnt for providing this forum whereby we can meet. I think it's worth the extra dollars and extra investment, for the sake of youth (or adults) who seek to better themselves, achieve high marks, and strive for those jobs which become our perfect fits.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have a Special Education degree with an emphasis in Mild/Moderate Mental Handicaps. While in pursuit of this degree, we had to learn extensively about attention deficit disorder. Additionally, I teach a large population of students with this disorder at the hospital in our special program. I've seen first-hand how various medications do help, but I've also seen how teaching strategies, when utilized, are equally as effective if not more effective than any pill can remedy.

Chess

I have been playing chess since I was first riding a bus to schools. Friends and I would get off the bus and play on our front porches on nice days right after school until dinnertime. I have played against my own students at work, teaching them various moves and strategies during the play of the game. Some students wanted to learn by observation or trial and error, while some students wanted to make wrong moves then be able to redo those moves throughout a game. Either way, when I played a student of mine, it was all about the teaching, and was never about winning.

Golf

I have been golfing since I was very young. I have taken lessons at Miracle Hills golf course and have been in competitive leagues for more than 30 years of my life. I have boxes and boxes of trophies and can score better than bogey golf, on average. I typically will shoot a birdie at least one time per every round of golf and have the capability of driving the ball over 280 yards. Like many golfers, I can develop bad habits which need correcting, therefore, I will completely relate to anyone I am instructing and could help them overcome their bad habits perhaps.

Prealgebra

In high school, I earned A's in Pre-Algebra and Algebra and B+'s in Geometry and Pre-Calculus. in college, I continued to take math, including Calculus and Statistics. Math has always been a strong suit in my family with our accountant father having taught us many valuable concepts back in the day.

Reading

I have logged more than 72 credit hours of university-level English courses, having earned a Master's in Creative Writing. I help students daily with English grammar skills, writing, and reading comprehension. Additionally, I am a published writer with works in various anthologies. I once won an Earth Day poetry writing contest and have aspirations to write Children's Literature in the not-so-distant future.

Study Skills

I often teach students how to prepare for exams by not waiting until the night before to begin study. I instruct them to study various sections a week in advance. Additionally, I give them strategies ranging from reading facts aloud, making a tune out of the information, or relating each piece of information to a color, object, or road map of some kind.

Table Tennis

I've been playing table tennis since I was very young. I used to play religiously in college, playing men from all over the United States in between classes, in evenings, or in tournament situations. I even played in tournaments on family vacations at Lake Okoboji, having won several times against opponents from across the region. My sister has a table at her house currently, and I had a table at my home growing up.

Tennis

I took tennis lessons for a few consecutive years at a very young age. I still enjoy playing occasionally 40 years later, plus I love to watch all the major tennis events on television and continually pick up on strengths and weaknesses of various players.

Student at ease...

Rob and my student have been working together for the first month of school. Although "we" have only had a few weekly interactions, my son feels very comfortable with Rob, and for a very shy 14 year old...that says a lot. My son says that Rob talks and teaches at "his level" so he understands how the information is being presented. Rob also allows my son to "work it out" himself but then shows
