About William

I have worked with words my entire life. For 35 years now, when I haven't been writing I've been teaching writing. I've never done anything else. I was the editor of an Air Force base newspaper, a staff writer on the official magazine of the U.S. Air Force, and the Air Combat Command News Service editor. During my 12-year military journalism career I placed both first and second in the feature writing category of the U.S. Government's annual competition. After the military, I was the city hall reporter for the Longview, Texas, News-Journal.

I went back to school for bachelor's and master's degrees, then spent the next 20 years teaching any writing course you can name at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Metropolitan Community College: Comp I (Essays), Comp. II (the research paper), oral and written reports, business writing, and technical writing. I have taught literally thousands of students how to write over the years. I was the First Data Resources business writing trainer for three years. During my tenure there, I rewrote and then delivered an updated version of business writing principles.

My teaching style is cheerleading. I am not a dictator or a lecturer; I seek a "buy in" from my students. I remind them how important communication is, how they'll be hobbled in life if they can't do it well. I am a people person. I think teachers are some of the most important people in society. It's a cliche, but true: young people are the future. If we don't teach them well, that future won't be too rosy. The most common remarks on my teacher evaluations in college invariably centered on my "realness." I have all the patience in the world for teaching. Good teachers share a gift. This is what I try to do.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
