About Kayla

I'm currently studying English and Spanish through the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

I intend to pursue a Master’s Degree in ESL and Spanish education, ultimately using education for public advocacy to benefit youth of low socio-economic background.

On campus, I advise fellow students regarding career objectives and work to combat stereotypes through several organizations dedicated to diversity appreciation and cultural literacy. In the community, I volunteer at two local high schools as an ESL mentor and assistant teacher, and am a judge for the Nebraska debate circuit, which promotes knowledge of and participation in domestic and international issues among high school students. In my free time, I enjoy biking with my dad in Omaha, baking, and practicing yoga at the Rec Center.

I would love to help you or your loved ones in their studies! Please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions or would like to work with me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I currently run a small business where I draw and design stickers and sell them. I have been drawing since I was a child because my grandpa is a Dutch artist who taught me everything I know in regards to drawing. I also have taken 3 drawing courses, including Intro to Drawing, Advanced Drawing, and Advanced Studio Art.

Public Speaking

I debated for my high school, Millard West in Omaha, NE, for 3 years on our varsity team. We won the state tournament all three of those years. Even though I am in college now, I am a regular judge for tournaments during the debate season. I am also studying to be an English teacher, which inherently means I have experience with public speaking and public speaking courses.

Reading

Throughout my college education, I have studied and researched the methods needed to help struggling readers find the confidence and motivation needed to be successful readers. I've worked with several students with learning disabilities, ELL students, and 7th-12th graders at low reading levels. Besides my experience as a teacher, I have always loved reading (Harry Potter was my gateway) and I want to instill that same passion in my students.

Spanish

I have been studying Spanish for nine years and am currently only two college courses away from getting certified to teach the subject in the classroom. I studied abroad in Bilbao, Spain during the spring semester of 2016 and taught English to freshmen-aged girls at an after school program there. I also help teach ELL at a High School and interact with Spanish speakers daily, which helps with brushing up on skills.

Kayla is awesome!

Kayla was great to work with and my daughter loved working her as her Spanish tutor. She was highly organized, very patient and developed a plan based on our needs. She also worked with our schedule which helped tremendously. This was a fantastic experience and will utilize her again for next school year for sure!
