About Hannah

I am a vertebrate paleontologist currently between my Master's program and a Ph.D. program.

I have experience with a wide range of age groups. Through high school I tutored at-risk middle school students in mathematics while also tutoring IB Biology. At the university level, I have tutored for the introductory Astronomy course. I've also been a teaching assistant for various Geology courses at East Tennessee State University and the University of Nebraska, leading sessions of Intro Geology Laboratory and running exam review sessions.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology (pre-med) and Geology from a top public university as well as a Master's in Geosciences. I earned a perfect score on the SAT Biology-E subject exam and a score of 5 in IB Higher Level Biology. I've also taken and tutored 101-level Astronomy.

I also have 2 years experience teaching introductory Geology laboratory at the college level.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

In have a firm grasp on the types of questions asked by the ACT Science section. My tutoring methodology focuses on how to approach these questions even if the student has not yet taken a particular science course. I received top marks on this section when I took the exam in high school, and since then I have had extensive training in multiple fields of science. Some of my graduate courses have focused exclusively on research methodology, including how to read charts and analyze data, which is heavily tested by the Science portion of the ACT.

Algebra 1

I've tutored algebra 1 longer than any other subject, off and on since 2005.

Astronomy

Because this subject has been a life-long fascination for me, I took an astronomy elective at the University of Florida for fun. After that, I regularly tutored students taking the introductory-level astronomy course. I bring a multimedia experience to my tutoring and enjoy keeping up with the latest discoveries.

Biology

I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Florida. In high school I selected Biology as my HL subject for the IB program exams. I regularly tutored IB Biology to underclassmen. I also received a perfect score on the SAT Biology-E subject exam.

Geology

I was most recently enrolled in UNL's Geology Ph.D. program after receiving a Bachelor's in Geology from the University of Florida and a Master's in Geosciences from East Tennessee State University. My coursework included mineralogy, petrography, structures, sedimentology, and mapping. I have extensive experience in the field, particularly in Utah. I have many resources to provide in a tutoring session, including hand samples I've personally collected in the field.

Geometry

I have tutored math skills, including geometry, since middle school. My main experience in this subject has been tutoring at-risk middle school students at a summer math camp, with the goal of getting the students caught up for the next grade level. This has equipped me to tutor a range of experience levels.

Prealgebra

I have tutored math skills, including prealgebra, since middle school. My main experience in this subject has been tutoring incoming middle school students at a summer math camp who wished to get ahead. I was also on my school's competitive math team in middle school, competing at the prealgebra, trigonometry, and algebra 1 levels.

Trigonometry

I have been a math tutor since middle school, where I began by tutoring at-risk students over the course of the summer. Later, I was a teaching assistant for a summer math camp aimed at high-achieving incoming middle school students. This has equipped me to work with a wide range of skill levels. My education in this subject was geared towards training for math competitions, emphasizing understanding the 'how and why' of math concepts, and I bring this approach to my tutoring sessions.

Writing

My educational experience in writing includes AP Writing, AP Literature, and IB HL English. I've also completed many larger writing projects including the IB Extended Essay as well as a Master's thesis. My tutoring method is to focus on the writing assignment, determining which components need to be included in the paper. From there, I work with the student to generate an outline to cover all required components, followed by emphasis on paragraph structure and sentence flow.

Zoology

I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology that included coursework in Vertebrate Zoology as well as Invertebrate Paleontology. I was a regular volunteer at the Florida Museum of Natural History's bird collection, which required an understanding of modern bird zoology to catalog specimens. Additionally, the focus of my Master's degree in Geology was Vertebrate Paleontology, which required graduate-level courses studying modern mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
