University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Social Studies Ed.)
Hello, my name is Joel. I am a Social Studies Education major at UNL. I am of senior standing and will graduate in May, I have been accepted into the college of education and have completed 2 field practicums and am currently doing my student teaching at Park Middle School, my Nebraska Initial Teaching Certificate will be in my hands shortly.
I am very experienced in tutoring middle school-aged students because of my time spent at these practicums. I was an after-school tutor at Irving Middle School in the "Homework Room" where I helped students with homework of all subjects. I also have experience tutoring students grades 6-12 because I volunteered at Lighthouse, the community-based after school program, where once again I helped students with homework in subjects outside of social studies. I also took the Praxis II last year (social studies content test) and scored very well), so I am willing to tutor college students as well.
I pride myself on my ability to develop close, professional relationships with students. This allows me to gain their trust and develop good rapport. From my experience tutoring, I often find that once I have gained their trust I am able to help them get "invested" in their work and education. Lack of effort is not the case for all students. Some students may just need a helping hand and that is where I am more than willing to step in and use my knowledge and educating skills to help them accomplish their goals.
In the classroom, I take a student-centered approach on teaching so students are in control of their education and I act as a guide to their success. I tend to do the same when tutoring by having students answer their own questions opposed to "spoon feeding" them the answers. If I am tutoring your student in social studies, I have a great grasp on the habit of mind skills (close reading, sourcing, corroboration, contextualization, and taking multiple perspectives) and I will be able to teach your student to use these skills in other subject areas as well. I possess a bachelor's degree in education and human sciences from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, as well as, a Nebraska initial teaching certificate.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor this subject area because of my experience with youth as well as my college education. I have spent hours tutoring students in multiple subject areas at Lighthouse, a community-based after school program in Lincoln. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in social science education and am certified to teach grades 7-12. Although, I have taken classes that gave me the knowledge and skills to teach lower grade levels. My tutoring methods are student-centered where the student controls their learning and sets the pace, and I help set the goals and make sure they accomplish them, acting as a guide to their education.
