Concordia College (German)
University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Master's)
I've been officially tutoring German, English, dance, piano, and other subjects for 10 years to students of various ages, abilities, learning styles, and goals. My informal teaching experience goes back even further than that to me helping home school my younger siblings while essentially also homeschooling myself.
I have worked professionally in the field of language education for many years. I have designed curriculum and trained instructors while working as the director of language education for a small LLC, and I have also owned and managed my own foreign language education LLC, which offered German, French, Spanish, Mandarin, and ASL courses to over 900 elementary school students in Fargo, ND. I am currently pursuing a master's in German at UNL, where I am also teaching German 101 and 102 to undergraduates.
I studied piano for 15 years, including for two years with a piano performance major in college. I have been an assistant dance instructor, regular salsa performer, salsa dance club co-founder and co-instructor, and key member of various swing, salsa, and ballroom clubs over the course of the past 10 years.
I am well-traveled, diverse, a grammar nerd, enthusiastic, patient, encouraging, and innovative. I take my skills, experience, and passion and wrap them up together to help you not only improve your German, English, dance, and piano skills, but also *enjoy* doing it!
My teaching approach, particularly with German and English, is one that emphasizes hands-on learning, immersion, and individual learning styles. I am flexible and adaptable and can teach what you want to learn, how you want to learn it. My creative, outside-the-box methods keep our lessons fresh and exciting, which helps you learn best! I encourage independence and truly taking charge of your own education --the more you invest, the more I can give you. I've been officially tutoring German, English, dance, piano, and other subjects for 10 years to students of various ages, abilities, learning styles, and goals. My informal
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I had private ballroom/salsa/swing dance lessons from ages 18-20 with a regular partner. For the past 8 years, I've also been involved in various ballroom, swing, and salsa clubs, including starting the salsa club in Fargo, ND and being a key member of the local swing and ballroom clubs. I have formally and informally instructed waltz, salsa, merengue, bachata, cha-cha, east coast swing, lindy hop, and charleston. I can also dance some Argentine tango, balboa, and blues. I have attended various dance classes and participated in several competitions and performances. Once I know what your specific dance learning goals are, I can develop a syllabus that works for you for any of the above-listed dances. In addition to teaching you basic steps, I can teach to you form, style, and flair. You'll be ready to hit the dance floor!
I come from a very musical family of both professional musicians and music teachers. I studied piano privately from the ages of 5-20, including two years as a piano performance major at Briar Cliff University, and have been a private music teacher since age 18. My teaching methods are diverse and innovative, and I strive to educate holistically by including music history and theory instruction, sight-reading, playing by ear, and a fun range of pieces (from warm-up exercises, to classics, to jazz, to holiday music, etc.) Piano is, in my opinion, the ideal first instrument for any student; and I also provide vocal lessons and beginning violin/viola lessons. My patience and enthusiasm in addition to my teaching style make me the perfect first music instructor for your child!
I love to read and learned how to read using the "Sing, Spell, Read, and Write" method back in the late '80s, early '90s. I was considered an advanced reader as a child and scored off the charts in the reading portions of standardized tests. As an adult, I received a 35/36 on the reading section of the ACT and I have also taken graduate courses in linguistics and phonetics.
When I teach, I strive to cater to each individual student's personal learning style and interests. Teaching a student phonics and how to read isn't just about those isolated topics: a good teacher instills a general love of learning. I can encourage your students' curiosity and interest in phonics and reading, and I have the patience to work with them at their own pace and in their own ways.
I studied piano privately from the ages of 5-20, including two years as a piano performance major at Briar Cliff University. Beginning at age 18, I became a fourth generation piano teacher in my family! Over the years, I have taught primarily young, beginner students, although I am also qualified to teach up to a certain advanced level. My teaching methods are diverse and innovative, and I strive to educate holistically by including music history and theory instruction, sight-reading, playing by ear, and a fun range of pieces (from warm-up exercises, to classics, to jazz, to holiday music, etc.) My patience and enthusiasm in addition to my teaching style make me the perfect first piano instructor for your child!
I had private ballroom/salsa/swing dance lessons from ages 18-20 with a regular partner. For the past 8 years, I've also been involved in various salsa clubs, including starting the salsa club in Fargo, ND along with my latin dance partner of the time. We offered salsa, merengue, bachata, and cha-cha lessons and also regularly performed in various local competitions. I don't often dance salsa now (tango more often than any other latin dance), but I've been told I'm a natural and dancing isn't really something one forgets... Once I know what your specific salsa dance learning goals are, I can develop a syllabus that works for you and I will easily brush up on what you want me to teach you. I have access to great music, and, in addition to teaching you basic steps, I can teach to you form, style, and flair.
As a homeschooler, I was allowed to learn on my own schedule and in my own ways. This independence and freedom gave me the opportunity to develop study habits that work for *me* and that have continued to serve me well all throughout my studies (I'm currently working on a master's degree).
As a teacher of useful study skills, I not only have diverse, innovative ideas to share, but I focus on helping my students increase their self-awareness: what do they like to learn? how? when? where? To me, helping a student develop positive study habits is NOT about fitting them into a one-size-fits-all box, but helping them develop their own unique approach that works *for them*.
