Florida State University (Music Performance)
University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Master's)
I am an experienced clarinet teacher looking to build a small private studio in the Lincoln, NE area. In addition to my educational background in clarinet and music, I currently teach as an adjunct faculty member at Doane College in Crete, NE. I have experience working with students of all ages and experience levels from 5th and 6th grade beginners through the collegiate level.
I believe that music lessons can be fun and beneficial for any student whether the goal is to improve their seating placement in band or be chosen for a festival such as All State, wanting to finally be able to play that one high note a student has been struggling with, or simply trying to catch up from starting into a band program late.
My past students have been selected by audition to perform with honor bands at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, Doane College, Kansas University, and the National All State Honor Band. I believe private lessons should challenge each student based on their own skill level and personal goals but should maintain a positive and fun learning environment and supplement their musical education from school and other private lessons.
In addition to clarinet lessons, I also have past experience tutoring students in the subjects of music theory and music history at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate education levels and have specific experience tutoring students in these subjects who speak English as a second language. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in clarinet performance from nationally accredited institutions. I currently teach clarinet as an adjunct faculty member at a college in NE and for a clarinet academy. I have also previously taught at Harris Music studio and as a substitute instructor at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln as a part of my graduate assistant assignment.
As a part of my degrees in clarinet performance, I have been require to develop a strong background in general music as a supplement to my specialty. I also have a background in playing several other instruments and teaching in general music settings in the elementary and junior high level.
As an undergraduate and graduate student, the majority of additional electives I took for my degrees were in music history. I have specifically taken courses in the Renaissance, Classical, and Romantic periods as well as American music history and have previous tutoring experience with students enrolled in 20th century music courses.
