I have advanced degrees in both history and English and a cumulative total of 12 years' college teaching experience. I do very well one-on-one with students and have been rated very highly by students for my clarity and communication skills. I've also tutored students in person for a total of three years in the writing centers of a number of institutions of higher learning. Prepared to help with projects of any size or specificity.
I've found that the most important aspect of successful tutoring is connection with the student as a person and individual, with individual needs and agendas and levels of ability. In writing, whether creative or critical, a student should be encouraged to find his/her individual voice rather than replicating dead, pseudo-academic language. The more natural the language, the more natural the ideas expressed with that language, and the happier both student and teacher will be with it. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
