About Tammy

After homeschooling my two boys and working myself out of a job, I realized how much I love working with and teaching children. I have taught reading in an after-school program in a Title 1 school as well as overseen a successful volunteer reading program in two Title 1 schools. I have tutored students in grades 3 through 7 privately in my home for the last 3 years. I use a variety of teaching methods including formal curriculum and custom lesson plans, depending on the needs of the student.

I am formally trained in multi-sensory reading instruction by the Nebraska Dyslexia Association where I am also a member. This method uses Orton-Gillingham methodology and is phonics intensive. For older students I use a variety of curriculum focusing on close reading, writing, and literature.

My formal education is in computer system engineering, but my most recent studies are in social justice from Arizona State University.

I provide one on one, relationship based, private tutoring. There is no "grade level" in my sessions and the student is free to be "right where they are". Personal growth in the academic subject is the goal. Progress is achieved with a positive relationship and positive feedback. Lessons are constructed to be challenging, but also to ensure success. Frustration with content that exceeds the ability of the student does not lead to success. In my tutoring sessions, there is no comparison to other students or competition with other students. The student is free to succeed at his or her own pace.

I look forward to working with you and helping your student experience success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I have privately tutored 7 students in my home and currently am tutoring 3 students. Two of my students are in the 5th grade and are behind in math. I have been asked by the parents to drill math facts and to work on basic math understanding. I supplement what they are learning at grade level with foundational skills in mental math, place value, and story problems.

English

I have experience tutoring 6th grade English in the Lincoln Public Schools District.

Phonics

I have been formally trained in multi-sensory reading instruction by the Nebraska Dyslexia Association, where I am a member. The multi-sensory instruction is based on the Orton-Gillingham methodology. I use a curriculum called All About Reading and I create my own custom lessons according to the needs of the student. I have tutored 7 students privately in my home.

Reading

I have been a professional tutor for grades K-7 for the last 8 years. I am formally trained in multi-sensory reading instruction by the Nebraska Dyslexia Association where I am also a member. I home-schooled my 2 children from grades 3-12 and I own several reading curriculum for a variety of grades. I have worked with large classes of students as part of a CLC at a Title 1 elementary school as well as supervised a volunteer reading tutoring program in two Title 1 elementary schools. I currently tutor 3 students in reading at my home.
