I have a thirty-year career in education. My early teaching experience was in secondary education as an English and Speech teacher. My next experience came as an English teacher at the middle school level in a private school setting. It was during this time that grammar instruction was more dominant than any other instructional activity. When I earned my Masters, I also secured an endorsement in 7-12 Reading. This background was utilized with elementary students, primarily, at this school. My next experience was in higher education in the area of Communication Studies. During this time, I was an adjunct instructor in a community college, a private college, and at a university. I also supervised student teachers in Language Arts at the secondary level.
Upon leaving the college classroom, I served as a tutor for college athletes. Tutoring involved getting the student athletes to make or formulate solutions to instructional issues through brainstorming and self initiative. What I offered were lines of inquiry that led them to more effective decision making. I do believe in a learner-centered approach where the process is crucial in getting to the finished product. I think the best tutoring happens when there is patience, persistence, and positive reinforcement. I have a thirty-year career in education. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
