About Kathleen

Dear Prospective Student or Parent of a Student,

Since 1990 I have been teaching as a volunteer full-time. I have successfully taught elementary school children as well as adults. I enjoy working with a variety of subjects especially the English language, reading, and public speaking. I excel at using visual aids and combining memorization with physical movement.

Now I am looking to teach part-time to supplement my income. I have completed the Advanced TESOL certification. My training has prepared me to teach English with humor and fun. I look forward to implementing the methods taught by Dr. Harry Cotton from the Canadian Institute of English. These methods are highly effective in teaching a student to become fluent and conversational in English.

Please contact me to schedule a session. I look forward to meeting you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience teaching and tutoring children of all ages. Previously I worked with the AVID program to assist high school students prepare for college. I specialize in reading and English.

ESL/ESOL

I have an Advanced TESOL certificate. Since 2013 I have worked with over ten students one-on-one either in their home, at a convenient location, or online.

Phonics

My experience teaching phonics includes reading and listening to a student's current knowledge then focusing on areas where improvement is needed. I use worksheets along with a variety of rhyming storybooks. Rhyming reinforces the correct sound of individual letters as well as blended letters. Phonics are important for children and ESL adults. This way the student learns the difference between 'r' and 'l' or 'th' and 'wh'.

Proofreading

I use Fowler's Modern English Usage and Strunk and White's Elements of Style as guides to proofreading. These allow for personal style while giving logical guidance to improve writing skills. I also received a certificate from edX for their Writing 101 class.

Public Speaking

I have participated in the Theocratic Ministry School for over 30 years. The assignments in this school teach how to prepare a five minute discussion on an assigned subject. The textbook, Benefit from Theocratic Ministry School Education, teaches public reading, modulation, eye contact, and even breathing. I have prepared demonstrations and interviews to be given in front of crowds of over 9,000 people.

Reading

For over 20 years I have worked with adults and children to help improve their reading. By using several techniques learned in my TESOL class as well as focusing on phonemes, I have been able to assist many to increase their fluency and confidence.

Special Needs

For several years I have been working with special needs students one-on-one. Recently I have been working in the school environment with Jr and Sr High School special needs students. During this time I have also completed the Special Education Requirements from the Project PARA - Self-Study Program for the state of Nebraska.

Study Skills

As a volunteer teacher and private tutor, my experience includes teaching study skills to people from a variety of educational backgrounds. Some of my students have completed their Masters degrees while others have never completed their compulsory education. All need the same foundations of reading for retention, succinct note-taking, and prioritizing for improves time management. After evaluating a new students learning style I am able to assist with an effective, personalized study plan.

Writing

I have been teaching reading and English for a couple decades. Recently I completed a writing and grammar class that helped me catch up with new rules and adjusted ideas about what is good writing.
