I have 20+ years of tutoring and teaching experience with children and adults. My first training as a teacher began at the elementary school level following the Maria Montessori training methods. More recently, I have worked as the Site Director for a K-5th grade academic improvement program, providing remedial support to children in language arts, math, reading, and science.
My academic background is in the social sciences. Whilst my graduate training focused on social anthropological theory, as an undergraduate I succeeded across all of the core subject requirements and graduated with honors - magna cum laude. Therefore, I possess a good basic understanding of the life and physical sciences and would be happy to tutor students in these areas as well.
In addition to English, I am fluent in German and a rare African language - Dinka - and have previously tutored and provided translations in both languages. I have over six years of experience teaching German on a private, one-on-one basis and 11 years as a resident of Germany living and working on the Germany economy in a largely Germany-only language context. I also possess a working knowledge of French and Italian, and have a solid, up-to-date understanding of European and world history and politics.
I enjoy helping and encouraging students to succeed and reap the benefits of their desire to do well in school and in specific subjects whether for a requirement or as a hobby. I have mentored and tutored youth and adults of different ages. In particular, I have been an effective tutor for students completing their HS Diploma and GED test for whom English is not their first language. I have successfully mentored students through the college system, and have also taught and lectured at the undergraduate and graduate levels internationally. Several of my former students have gone on to be teachers, scientists, and engineers.
I am patient, understanding, and have a sense of humor, and prefer to make the learning process fun as well as productive. My teaching style is clear and accessible enabling motivation and achievement in the shortest time possible. My schedule is flexible. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked for the last two years as the Site Director of the 21st Century Community Learning Center Afterschool Program at Dodge Elementary School in Grand Island, NE providing academic remedial support to children in K through 5th grades, including reading, language arts, math, and science.
I first started teaching in 1979, using the Open Court Reading program which teaches reading phonetically by blending sounds together to form words. All of the 13 children I taught in Montessori graduated from college and four are now teachers with master's degrees.
I serve as an expert witness and country of origin information expert for the Sudan. In this work I have given live testimony in 26 cases. In my work as a research and anthropologist, I have given over 100 public speaking engagements, presentations at conferences and workshops. In 2011 I gave three presentations at a refugee resettlement workshop at Northwestern University. I have a Masters degree from the London School of Economics. During my studies I have been required to give many presentations.
